Workout routine question

Starting a new fitness regime in the gym. Before I was quite a novice, and never would have looked up advice on what to do - would have just done arms, chest, shoulders.

Now I see recommended programmes that say things like 'work your deltoids one day, your chest and shoulders the next day, your legs the next day, etc'

Is this a more productive approach? Doing one area of exercises per gym visit? As I said before, I would usually do a mixture of the usual stuff.

Do you play sports? What's your goals?

I would stay away from split body isolation style stuff unless you want to be bodybuilder.

Focus on body weight stuff, deadlift, squat (front and back), press, bench, pull ups. If you can get someone to teach you Olympic lifting go for it. Kettle bells are great addition to any program.
