The incident happened at about 1.45pm on the N17, on the Milltown side of Tuam.
It is understood a car struck a father and his two children as he was walking them on the hard shoulder.
Gardaí say the two children were both girls, one aged two-years-old and other aged two months.
They were taken by ambulance to University College Hospital in Galway, where they were pronounced dead.
The male driver and the children's father were also taken to University Hospital Galway. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The N17 at Dunmore is closed, pending the completion of an examination of the scene, and diversions are in place.
Gardaí say the road is closed and diversions are in place. They have asked for witnesses to the crash to contact Tuam Garda Station on 093 70840.

This is so tragic my heart goes out to the parents of these babies I hope the father is ok. It's hard to believe you could be out walking and for this to happen.

    RIP to the little girls.

    Very tragic.:(

That section of N17 is a twisty death trap that should have been replaced decades ago. It's close to the spot where four young women were killed in a horrific head-on collision a short while ago.

Horrible. The father will carry this with him to his grave, I don't think you could ever get over something like that. Sympathies to the family.

How do you manage to do that in broad daylight? Would love to hear his explanation.

RIP, feel so sorry for the father.

    That's absolutely horribe :(

My main question is why were they walking on a hard shoulder considering the age of the kids. I admit I don't know the road so I'm not sure whether it's particularly wide or not.

At any rate it's terrible news, that poor family and the family who were in the car.

You know how some tragedies hit you more, when I heard this on the news I just could not get it out of my mind, how your life can be changed for ever. I know there are lots of tragedies in the world but for some reason some tear at the heartstrings more than others.

According to reports by the Galway Advertiser the driver of the car had a heart attack, dunno how true it is.

    Such a tragedy :(

This accident was just on the northern fringe of Tuam. Straight stretch of road past the Ard Ri.

Walked and ran that stretch plenty of times.

Very tragic accident. Words can't express my sadness for this poor family

Not really, it's a good bit away from that site, which was between Milltown and Ballindine.

RIP thoughts are with the family. I can't begin to imagine what they are going through.

That stretch of road is part of a popular circuit for walkers in Tuam. There would be dozens of people walking on that hard shoulder every day, especially at weekends.

When walking on a road where there is no footpath, the law is to walk on the side if it. Cars are not supposed to drive on the hard shoulder, so they probably thought they were safe.

That is true, I just wonder whether there would have been safer routes to walk besides a main road. Doesn't matter now of course, Horrible stuff.

If its the only road that brings you to your destination then you have no choice but walk on it. I don't think it's fair to question his reasons for been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Wrong on both counts. This tragedy happened on the edge of town where the road is straight and would be lit at night for example. I can only imagine the driver must have had a personal trauma for the accident to occur.
