I find that outside of maths I have no idea what anyone us on about it anything and i can see obviously I'm fait stupid and thats why I have allot of trouble with the news and stuff. do you find that you are limited by your brain? and when do you meet your limits? I'd each day a big reminder that you are thick? or a reminder that everyone else is? Haha. Or are you in the middel. :)

I believe you can be thick as two short planks but due to the right background, luck etc, etc, it's not an issue, on the other hand, you can have the intelligence of Chomsky yet if you have an image deficit, born into a poor background, etc. it counts for nothing

Isn't everyone limited by their intelligence?

My IQ is so low it fell over: ∞

Yeah my intelligence holds me back, most of the time nobody understands my grand elevated plain of thinking and just assumes I'm being a complete eejit, when in fact I'm delivering gems of wisdom minute after minute which those poor unfortunate gobsh!tes will never be able to grasp.

I feel for them. I really do. :(

People who aren't academically smart are generally smarter at life.

    That is generally untrue.

Honestly, the best people in my life are not concerned with the level of their intelligence. Most haven't been to college. They are hard working and enjoy life and are not concerned with how people perceive them. They are intelligent but not in a forced way. They make spelling mistakes and haven't a dictionary sized vocabulary, but can express themselves better that someone who is too consumed with sounding intelligent.

The worst type of people are the ones who are so paranoid about their intelligence not being recognised that they force it on everyone.

That saying, everyone should try to broaden their minds and abilities. You mightn't have the sharpest intellect but if you have interests and something to talk about, you'll get along well in life.

Don't the smart people generally end up working for the less educated?

Hard work beats intelligence in most cases. Im lucky to have both but it's balanced out by my less than stellar looks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,578 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

So, if I'm not the cleverest, not so easy on the eye and extremely lazy, do I get some kind of superpower to address the karmic imbalance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭Gi joe!

Not really, it'd be more my devastatingly good looks that intimidates other people.

On a more serious and less sexy note I've noticed that the ability to hold a conversation and be affable trumps book smarts for a lot of success in life. If you can communicate well with people and get in their good books(especially in areas like work), it can often be more important than other factors like your intelligence(which people associate with memory retention).

If your not own throwing bangers into peoples letterboxes, fighting outside the chipper, pissing in doorways and generally being a public nuisance then I'd say your not doing too bad intelligence wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭Remmy

Not really. I'm not saying I am super intelligent by any stretch but any time In my life that I didn't do as well as I hoped on something it was because I was being lazy and not bothering. Any achievements that I can look back on with pride are the result of me pulling the finger out and working really hard and getting sh-t done.

This is, by and large, just bull**** that inept people tell themselves to make themselves feel better.

I'm not super intelligent by any stretch of the imagination. But I am fairly intelligent, high points in the Leaving Cert. (not that that means a thing!), doing well in my honours degree at the moment, and have been described as a smart girl by many. I don't think I'm very intelligent but I do think I'm reasonably smart.

I find it holds me back when I meet a lot of 'below average' intelligence people. I'm not a snob at all and third level degrees, what kind of job someone is in, where someone is from etc. doesn't mean a thing to me. However, I do find that there is a disturbing amount of people in society with low intelligence who are in general proportionally more ignorant, arrogant, racist, homophobic etc. I know you can have geniuses who can be racist/homophobic but in general this is what I find. I also find these people generally haven't a clue about social or political ideals and I just wish they could be educated about things before forming opinions.

That said, I also find my shockingly poor ability at mathematics holds me back in common tasks. I was never good at it, worked damn hard to pass honours level Maths in school and have shied away from using it ever since.

I'm not sure about intelligence but sitting in class wondering why the hell you are there on a wet winter's morning while the cat is curled up at home certainly presented me with some difficult circles to square.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭king_of_inismac

There are a lot of different types of intelligence. People tend to concentrate on academic intelligence.

Other types include sports-intelligence (e.g. a really skillful footballer or a great dancer) or mechanic intelligence (someone who is good working with their hands) or social intelligence (someone who can get on easily with other people). There are also some great "all-rounders".

If you have some advantage in one of these areas, it makes life a hell of a lot easier. Be very thankful for it!

I'm a reasonably intelligent person so I would say no; however, I hold myself back in a variety of others ways so I suppose it all evens out.

And, you know, I hate the way how it's almost a crime to admit to being intelligent.

Yes I was in CTYI as a kid, yes I got high points in the LC, yes I got a 1:1 degree. I don't think I'm crazy-intelligent, not by any stretch of the imagination. But, being perfectly honest, I'm far from thick.

And of course my intelligence has helped me in my career to date - how could it not? And, while intelligence is not the only important thing, obviously it's going to matter to potential employers. A lot.

I am confused by the premise of the thread. No, OP, I have not noticed your posts, and I have no opinion on your level of intelligence. But surely, all other things being equal, any employer would prefer the employee with the higher level of intelligence? Why would they not?

u seems like maybe you are a genious by what you said. i just mean i feel like i am missin out on stuff in life because of my lack of intelligence and unability to know what people are on about when they are talking...

    Yes it holds me back.

Holds me back because I have to drop down 15+ levels to have conversations with dullards when I could be creating perpetual motion machines, free renewable energy, exploring the mechanics of time travel etc. etc.
