They would normally be quite a bit more expensive the an independent garage alright.

You'd also need to know which bushes for a price.

It probably failed on the front wishbone front bushes as these are a common problem with the B6 Passat. The main dealer will be the most expensive place to get it sorted so you would be better off finding a good independent. Make sure they use genuine VW bushes only. They are only €12 each from VW so savings made on aftermarket parts will be minimal and nothing else will last as long as genuine.

Just to give you a range of differences between main dealers and independents....

I had the exact same problem with my Volvo S40. An independent in Stillorgan quoted me 200 to fix - a main Volvo dealer quoted me 395...

nothing else will last as long as genuine.

Except Lemforder, these are considered after market, but wait they are made by ZF Sachs, who just happen to supply VAG with the steering, Suspension and clutch parts, so yeah nothing lasts as long as OE....

When it comes to rubber bushes, nothing lasts as long as OE. That is my experience and I stand by it. I have used just about every aftermarket brand including the OEM suppliers like Lemforder and Febi and they just aren't as good as OE. They are also just as expensive as OE in a lot of cases so there is no advantage in choosing them over the genuine part.

Sorry for slight thread high jack, any point in putting polybushes in a standard road car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

Yes they are a good option. We have fitted Powerflex bushes to lots of B6 Passats and other Golf 5 based cars. There is a trade off in refinement but nothing too major and they will outlast standard items.

My point is these are "Genuine". Lemforder (ZF Sachs) manufacture the parts and sell them to the likes of VAG. All you are getting from the main dealer is the same part from the same production line in a different box. I will go further and explain the VW actual have clutch kits from the 1.6TDi golf remanufactured. Sachs sell the brand new unit. Yes there is a massive price difference in the dealers favour, but what would you fit on a fairly new car, re-manufactured or "Genuine" re-manufactured parts?

I have also sold a lot more "aftermarket" parts that do not give any problems what so ever, Moog, Lemforder, Febi. And some that have given problems, so much so, the company I worked for stopped importing them.

This thread is not about clutches. I agree totally with you when it comes to clutches, brakes, shocks, filters, spark plugs etc. but rubber bushes are different.

Not when they are made in the same factory, by the same people, for the same company. The go down the production line and end up marked for aftermarket or direct to the manufacture for either new build or dealer parts sales.

I was using the clutches to make a point, it may be any steering part, any electrical part, braking etc. You know TRW help design the braking and steering for many manufactures? Sachs and LUK help with Gearbox and Clutch design, Jaguar and Range Rover with a ZF gear box.

I don't mean to bring the thread off topic, but people need to know the deal with aftermarket parts and not the misconception that is out there.

It's not that simple. A genuine bush is different to a Lemforder or Febi bush when you look at them side by side. It's not like a timing belt for example where the only difference is the colour of the markings on the belt and the addition of a VW logo.

Another thing that should be pointed out is that if you go into most motor factors in the country and ask for wishbone bushes for a Passat you won't get Lemforder parts. You will get QH or Delphi or First Line or similar scrap which isn't worth fitting and then to add insult to injury you will get charged the same or more as if you bought the genuine parts in the main dealer.

I agree and most in the trade do that QH is like a box of choclates, you never know what your gonna get..

If people want to so their own work on their cars they need to learn the difference.

Any way back on topic, Main dealer would be expensive, go to a trusted indie. The main dealer usually charge a hell of a lot more on labour.

why dont you get the best of both worlds? find out what bushes you need,go to vw parts dep and buy them genuine, bring them to an indy and get fitted.this way you get sorted without paying the mad main dealer labour charges, spurious bushes wont last pissing time so i would'nt bother with them

Some independent garages use genuine parts and would even keep certain fast movers such as these Passat bushes in stock ;-)

George I thought it was common practice to just replace the whole wishbone as opposed to pressing in bushings???

It depends on the car really. In this case it works out a lot cheaper to change the bushes than to replace the whole arm.

indeed, some garages even keep replacement wishbones in stock (probably got from a breaker) and just throw in a wishbone when a car comes in for bushes and replace the bushes in the 'spare' one during a quiet part of the day.

Phoenix motors supply and fit genuine front large wishbone bushes for about €100, if its the smaller ones there's more labour but defo worth a call.
