I'm taking a car to the ncts during the week, will I be issued with the new reg on the day? And can I then tax the car the same day?

99% yes, in fact I think that you can do it online if you have the last 6 digits of the chassis number..

The car has 1 year MOT on it, do they issue an NCT cert on the day, or do they put the car through a full check? I plan on changing all tyres, one of them is on the limit, since I have a valid MOT will they check tyres?

Yeah, that's how I booked it in, online.

Afaik they dont actually test the car like a normal test. UK Mot means nothing over here..

So I'll have to book a normal NCT as well?

You'll get the new reg number on the day of VRT, but you won't be able to tax it for about a week, or few days at least, as everything has to be sent on and entered in Shannon and processed before the car ends up in the database.

NCT, if it's required for the car based on age, will have to be booked and done as normal on a separate date. MOT is not valid in the republic, or on any republic registered vehicle, and is non-transferrable with the NCT.

IIRC, You have 1 week from the time of VRT/getting the new reg, to display the correct plates on the car.

So technically I can't drive it until I get the tax disk and NCT

Terchnically if you want to be 100 legal, you can't drive it.

MOT is not valid in the republic, or on any republic registered vehicle, and is non-transferrable with the NCT.

Which is against EU Law, and if someone made complaint against Ireland to EU court of justice, they would force Ireland to accept test certificates from other memberstates.

Technically yes, but I drove mine continually after importing. I never got stopped, but I'd assume so long as you've proof you've a VRT appointment with you, and proof of recent purchase, it should be fine.

Similarly after VRT, if you've proof it's just been registered, and it's not on the system, how can you be expected to have it taxed?

I am not disagreeing with you, but when I brought a car into the country after doing the VRT they said I was ok to drive it on the old plates but to get new plates within a couple of days and tax it, including arrears, as soon as I got the reg cert.
In the mean time keep the paperwork in the car in case I was stopped, but that their would be no problem.
Thats what she said and thats what I did and I had no problem.

Regulations says you have to display new (Irish) plates within 3 days of registering.
That generally means that you can drive for those 3 day on old plates (f.e. UK). Theoretically then you should be legal on UK plates, but I'm not sure how it works, as in fact you already registered car in Ireland, and you don't hold UK V5C, so car is not really registered in UK anymore.
    I'm not sure about this.
and tax it, including arrears, as soon as I got the reg cert.
This might take a week or two to get reg cert.
I'm sure you can tax it sooner online, but you still need few days before car will be available in the system for taxing.
With NCT it's even worse as it takes longer. Usually you need few weeks for appointment.
In the mean time keep the paperwork in the car in case I was stopped, but that their would be no problem.

Of course no one is going to have any problems if they keep paperwork.

    But..
On the one hand there is legislation requiring you to have valid tax an NCT at all times.
On the other hand, there is plenty of situation where you can't have them, because doing all the paperwork takes time.

People who are in charge of those legislations know this, but for some unknows reason don't bother to accomodate it in legislation. It wouldn't be that much problem to write in finance act, that TAX must be displayed at all times, with exception for time when reg cert is being in the process of issue. It wouldn't be that difficult to include in NCT regulations, exception for vehicles just VRTed awaiting first appointment.
But no - they don't bother.

Instead if you get stopped by Garda, they must show a bit of good will (and they always do) and don't penalise someone for offences which they indeed commited, but not because of their own fault.

I know it works. There is never any problem.
But it's just not done right.
Law shouldn't be constructed in the way that officers who are there to enforce it, must make leeway for situations where this law can't be obeyed.
