What would your thoughts be on using a Cube Acid as a road bike compared to a Giant Rapid. Talking roughy two 40 km spins a week and a couple of shorter runs.

    Would there be any advantages?

The Cube is an MTB and the Giant is a hybrid. For on road stuff the Giant is better. For MTB trails the Cube will be better.

That said, I commuted on a Cube Analog for a year or so and after I fitted slicks on it and took out the spacers under the stem it was quite OK speed wise. Also comfort is not too shabby and due to the riding position you can see above traffic which helps with seeing pedestrians walking between stopped cars and motorcycles trying to squeeze between cars onto the cycle lane (for some reason motorcyclists don't think that there could be cyclists in a cycle lane  ). While the flat sections of road on non windy days are just fine on the MTB, the moment the road starts pointing upwards and/or there is even the slightest hint of a headwind the suffering starts.
