Hard Drive/Window 7 problem

    Hey there!

Hope I'm in the right place! Having a bit of trouble with my laptop... Last week it decided to stop working, went through the BIOS and various other ways of restarting but couldn't do anything with it!
A friend took out the hard drive and was able to view some of the files through his own computer, then put it back into my own laptop again, and magically it worked fine.... Well kinda....

Its seems to be working fine now but it does freeze/crash a bit. Was able to back up most document/music/picture files to an external hard drive (I hadn't before now.... I know, I'm stupid/lucky) but I think the Hard drive is slightly corrupted now. I cannot seem to back up Windows 7 on anything because of the corruption...

Any suggestions on how and if I can back up my OS now?? also, I don't think I have enough faith in the HD anymore (final year of college and will be working with LabView a lot off my laptop and REALLY don't want to loose that!!), so any good sata notebook 2.5 inch recommendations?

Any bit will help! Thanks in advance! :)

    Click on the Start button.
In the "Run" box type cmd
When the Command Window opens (Black window with white text)
    Type chkdsk

I'm assuming your main hard drive letter is "C:" - If not, Change C with correct Letter of Drive

Type chkdsk c:/ r to repair errors on the Drive and recover any bad sectors.
Type chkdsk c:/ f to Just repair the Drive.

If you get a message saying "CheckDisk cannot run" Type YES and restart your Laptop. The Drive will be checked when it is rebooting.

256 GB Samsung 830 Series, €162 at CU. Best deal around.

However, before you ditch the drive, grab UBCD and run ViVARD.

Did the whole "chkdsk c:/ r" thing when we got the laptop up and running again, came up with 30ish repairs that it couldn't repair.

    UBCD = Ultimate Boot CD

A great collection of hardware diagnostic tools and more, and yes, it's free. ;)

    Ultimate Boot CD.
Vivard is hard drive diagnostics tool.

    Another one is Bart's Stuff

What make is your hard drive? Most manufacturers provide a disk diagnostics tool for their Drives.
    Seagate and Samsung
    Western Digital
    Fujitsu

Many others (Hitachi, Maxtor, Toshiba etc..) - LINK

Sounds like your hard drive could be gone though.

tbh, Haven't a clue, never looked! What ever came with the laptop!

It is slowing down a good bit again and freezing as we speak, I suppose its best to just start looking for a new one. Had just about 400gb on it, so I happy that we got it working again to get some stuff off and saved!!
