Go Clever Digital Receiver in TESCO

Just wondering if anyone has one of these receivers. I am looking for something to buy for my dads house. He has a full sky subscription so this is just for a spare TV which is only used very rarely.

There isn't an aerial on the roof but we can get decent enough signals from rabbits ears.. The TV3 signal is quite good.

I say this receiver in TESCO earlier for €39 and was tempted to buy but would be interested in some feedback.

Has anyone bought one of these ?

    Thanks in Advance

    Get a proper Certified receiver.

The only advantage of this over the Hong Kong models is a Safer PSU. It will not do all features of Saorview and may wear out prematurely due to too small case and overheating.

Tesco are selling BETTER boxes in N.I. at similar or less money that are "Freeview HD" which is more compatible than these.

Thanks for reply. Just thought they might have done for the spare TV but I am probably better off going for a basic saorview approved box. It is really just to have the RTE junior channel in there for the kids to watch when they are visiting so my Dad doesn't have to suffer Nick Jr on his main tv for the day:)

If I was upgrading a second or bedroom TV I would go for one of those units, tidy and compact and out of view.

Another of those units to consider would be the Ferguson Ariva T65mini available in Peats.

Not approved, no MHEG and priced the same as approved boxes, so why?

Cheaper than an approved box and a neat tidy compact solution for a bedroom TV. If I had any analogue TVs in the house I'd be using one. I use a four and a half year old TV in a bedroom at the moment, doesn't do MHEG-5 but I'm not going to replace it for that reason, I'm happy with analogue text ;) .

I thought I heard on TV news this evening analogue text closes next week ( a week after picture shut off)

    Which evening news?

Saorview posted on twitter earlier this month that RTÉ will end the traditional teletext service at ASO this Wed but it will continue on TV3 and TG4.

As you can get approved boxes for €49 it is not cheaper, though these scart things can be got a lot cheaper than that on ebay.

It's one thing not to replace a TV without MHEG 5 but absolutely stupid to buy something that doesn't do especially as WST is being switched off.

I believe Lidl have had them at that price, there must be others.

The most recent Saorview receivers were either €55 or €60 at Lidl and Aldi.

Edit: Lidl Mon Oct 15th - Laurus Saorview STB €59.99

The cheapest Saorview STB I came across was in Argos during the summer €50. Gone back up to €60 since the new catalogue came out in Aug.

And Hardly Normal were selling the Finlux ones for €50 in late August. Now gone up to €69:eek: And they still manage to lose millions every year here.:(

    Digihome €60 in Power City.

Apart from Triax all the approved set top-boxes are more or less the same, though the Nordmende has a blue led instead of a green one.

One thing I will say is that Lidl/Aldi give you three years cover and once you have the receipt they are pretty much no quibble.

someone claimed to have seen an approved box in tesco recently for €50 but tesco bargains fly off the shelves
