Car Service Renault Laguna

Left my car in to be serviced in a Renault garage today.

Received a call at lunch time to say that i needed new brake pads (front and back) and a change of fuel filter. Asked how much all this would cost and was told if i get all done the cost would be €500.

This is a 08 car that i purchased from the same place this year, so my first service in a proper renault garage.

It seems very expensive, am i right or is this the usual?

It's probably about average for a main dealer but you could get the same work done much cheaper if you went to a good independent garage instead.

If you got all the parts from a motor factors and brought it to an independent garage you'd save a lot off that quote. Just make sure you get the correct spec stuff.

Slightly OT but why not just let the garage supply the parts themselves? I don't really get the recent trend for people supplying their own parts for garages to fit. It causes more problems than it solves IMO...

If you do go ahead with the service, get an itemized receipt and post it on here.

had a Laguna for a while always got it main dealer serviced for most of it life.
cut a long story short they are over priced and don't do the little extras you expect.

if you bought all the parts yourself it would probably cost you less than 100 euro. so your paying a high premium on labor

Parts would be well over €100 in this case to be fair:

    Oil filter
    Oil
    Fuel filter
    Front pads
    Rear pads

Plus there may be an air filter and cabin filter included in the quote plus a brake fluid change for all we know.

    slightly OT.
I got parts for my megane online and got my local independents to do the service.
70 for the parts including 10L castrol oil and 50 for labour.

Now that is typical not only do you doubt my off the cuff pricing but you have added a lot more on to it and in a Renault dealer they would call this full service + brakes front and back. cabin filter is always a option change at additional pricing as its not included in a mini or main service as standard.

so let see how I get on, source ebay as pricing is easy to show
Disclaimer don't have the engine / model of Laguna so used a diesel that is a little pricer.
    Front pads http://www.ebay.ie/itm/New-Mintex-Front-brake-pads-Renault-Laguna-II-1-9-Diesel-88-Kw-01-/350595649356?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item51a1210f4c €30.99 euro free P&P
    Rear pads http://www.ebay.ie/itm/New-Mintex-brake-pads-Rear-Renault-Laguna-II-1-6-Petrol-82Kw-05-/261076303319?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc95c3dd7 €27.99 euro free P&P

complete filter kit oil air and fuel http://www.ebay.ie/itm/RENAULT-LAGUNA-MK2-FILTER-KIT-OIL-AIR-FUEL-1-9-DCI-/120993663142?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c2bc8c8a6 30.79 + postage 18.47 total €49.26 euro

    fuel only filter
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Fuel-Filter-RENAULT-LAGUNA-2-0-16V-Turbo-03-Hatchback-/160631176397?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item25665d3ccd €6.89 euro + postage €9.80 total €16.89 euro. in fact all of above could be bough in a local motor factor for similar pricing if not cheaper as there be no postage.

A good quality oil about 30 euro... from local supplier.

total price for what the the original poster had stated round up to nearest euro.
    Front brakes 31 euro
    back brakes 28 euro
    fuel only filter 17 euro
total € 76 euro posted to the door...

to include all the extras you have suggested Renault dealer call it a full service... + brakes front + brakes rear + pollen filter.
    front brakes 31 euro
    back breaks 28 euro
    complete filter kit 50 euro
    oil 30 euro
    pollen cabin filter 20 euro

Total € 159 euro in parts and you be lead to believe he was rebuilding the car and it would take days to do.

Now of course with better details of the car the price may be cheaper. Shopping around motor factors this price could be reduced yet again.

so my comment to the original poster is € 76 euro worth of parts go find a good local shop and save yourself some coin.

How can you expect a garage to stand over work if you supply the parts.
Probably many garages will refuse to use parts supplied that they cant stand over.

Ok if the parts are oe, but many people will just get parts that are the cheapest available and possibly of poor quality.

your motor factor can advise of the quality of the parts and to be fair we are taking about pads and a single filter that reanult don't make but buy in and retail it on...

That adds up to €106 with no oil filter included. You are also optimistic with the price of the oil and I would imagine you need to double the price of the fuel filter as the part you have quoted for is a petrol fuel filter which I doubt the dealer would be recommending be changed.

Your figure of €159 is more realistic for decent quality parts, that is the point I was trying to make when I questioned your initial €100 guess.

I would assume seeing as the title of the thread is "car service Renault Laguna" that the OP left the car in for a service and they rang him with the extras being the brakes and fuel filter rather than the quote being for only brakes and the fuel filter.

So Oil and filter would be the starting point.

only ITMissy can clarify that as we are presuming on the service and if its full or mini service or none.

either way its a very high cost that a local garage could knock down by quite a bit.

George the petrol and diesel filters can be got for the same price.
and no matter what way you break this down it 3 hours labour.

the reason many are supplying the parts themselves is that they are getting such poor deals when it comes to having their car repaired.

Here is a quick example of my Laguna
Front spring broke damaging the front shock on a Laguna II €840 in main dealer to replace both front shocks and 1 spring.

6 months later the other front spring broke €400 euro reduced price because they had done the other side...

    Now http://www.ebay.ie/itm/NEW-KYB-coil-spring-srings-FRONT-Renault-Laguna-II-1-9DCi-2-0DCi-01-07-/251044704100?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a736e2f64 is € 44.49

Its a replacement part not problematic OEM part that are known to just brake.
your into cars if I turned up with a front spring how much would you charge to fit it ? ?

Let me ask you a question first. Imagine you are in this situation where you need a spring replaced in your car:

For argument's sake let us assume that I can buy that spring you linked to above from my supplier for the same price of €45 and the supposed "retail price" is €70.

So you ring me up and ask me how much to change a spring in your car. I say €120. €70 for spring and €50 for fitting (not accurate just theoretical figures)

So now you go onto ebay and get the spring for €45 and bring it along to me for fitting. How much should I charge you for the job?

    Hi ITMissy

Prices do seem on the high side, you will do much better with a good independent.
Dont compromise on the quality of the fuel filter though. If you do go for an independent, find one with a good track record.

You say you bought the car this year from this garage. When? How much milage have you covered since you bought it? is this city driving?

I still laugh to myself when I see dealers charging for basic consumables like these.

@OP, there really is no reason to use a main dealer over a reputable independent garage. As has been said, you could get all that work done with equal quality parts(remember, Renault don't make parts) for a decent amount cheaper.
