Anyone know who the very large group of runners are that train out the straight road during the week?

Was out running the other night when about 100 if not more came past me, split over a number of smaller groups. I am assuming its UCC running club :pac:

Might be leevale if it was Tuesday or Thursday evening. They usually do warm up around the lee fields before going back to the Mardyke for their session.

If Monday night 6:30 - 8 would be St. Finbarrs. We do a 4 mile loop that you can do once or twice. Pace varies a lot.

    Great.
They have shifted their parking problem up outside The Farm, now it's only a matter of time before the council (corporation?) impose parking restrictions outside TheFarm.
    That'll be €2 per run please.:madder:

Nah won't happen. Suppose it's the reason why they are needing to build over the farm, Hope they have parking (not behind a locked gate) for the new farm.

It was Thursday night when I passed them, great to see such a large uptake in runners out the road these days. I guess the reason I asked is that I have been contemplating joining a running club in the new year to help training so I have been taking notice of running clubs in the city.

I have one or two friends of friends in a certain running club in the city but by all due accounts the club is gone to pot lately... Any recommendations for a club in the city are any people on here members of any in particular?

    1. Why wait till the new year ?
    2. Not going to ask which club but what you mean going to pot ?
    3. St. Finbarrs - Large club with wide range of ages (early 20's to 60+ ) and abilities (beginners to some excellent runners). Friendly and inclusive with a good variety of different training sessions you can choose from during the week. Have not trained for 2 weeks with them as I am tapering for DCM but looking forward to getting back after. The group for winter road runs is supposed to be pretty big (much bigger than the summer) i am told. As being late 20's nearly 30 it was important that there was people of a similar age to me at the club I choose also it was important that there was people of my ability too but people at much better ability so I could learn and be challenged by them too. St. Finbarrs has all this. please read: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056672729

St Finbarrs would be my recommendation tbh but a tip I got some time back was to look at the results of some of the local 5k, 10k etc races and then go to the time in the list that you normally run those in.... have a look at what club runners are in and around that time and a bit quicker and then if it is local to you....thats the one....

Idea being that you are going to a club with runners of all levels (including your own current one) rather than one with much faster runners where you might be a bit disheartened.

The main thing for me would be...if you are not a member of a club... then you might be missing out on some good tips/advise/training that will help you improve hugely...it worked for me, plus the training nights in the winter can be good craic.

    Thanks Rom and AEDIC...
Unfortunately, I have to wait til new year as I am heavily committed to another sport until around January so I wouldn't be able to fully commit til then...

But yeah I have heard of Finbarrs and they certainly look good and always have a large turnout at races. I would be a kind of middle of the pack type runner and am hoping to run a <3.30 marathon in Cork next year...I sometimes get frustrated running on my own hence why I am looking at joining a club

There is another sport that is worth doing ? ;)
3:30 is big goal, what is your current PB ?

Trust me, i'm not taking it lightly but for now, that's what I am setting my goal at. I have never run marathon distance, only half marathon.

This year, I was training for it but got side tracked and jacked it with about 8 weeks to go. I was quietly confident of going under 4hrs at the time and touching 3.45. I have a PB over 10 miles of 75 mins which my good friend McMillan tells me is enough to touch on 3.30 :)

So I think with some consistency which I never had previous, and a good plan I think I 3.30 is realistic. My plan is to keep ticking over with running training and other things until late Jan when I will begin a 16 week plan (P&D up to 50miles)...there a lot of running between here and then though and I am quite likely to wimp out of it yet! :D

McMillan should be taken with a big cup of salt if you have not run the distance before.

Yep, I agree. If 3.30 seems too ambitious closer to the date (were talking 8 months from now) I will gladly reassess to 3.45...But hey, lets start ambitious right..;)

I personally don't agree with just running a marathon just to complete it. I know the majority of people seem to do this on the first attempt. I agree its a long way to go and should be respected. There was a few occasions now where I was training away and tempted to sign up for a marathon, throw in some 20 mile runs and prob finish in 4.10 - 4.20...

3.30 is my goal and I am going to aim hard for it. If I am running closer to 70 minutes in Ballycotton 10 and/or Mallow 10 then I will be on track..

Best of luck with your training. Joining a club would be great for the motivation on those cold nights. ;)
