Staying in Castletroy tonight and need to get to Ennis for 11 in the morning just wondering if the suggested walking route on google maps is the best way to go?

    http://maps.google.ie/maps?hl=en&safe=off&gl=ie&q=castletroy+to+ennis&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bpcl=35466521&biw=1280&bih=709&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

If it was me I'd carry stright on into town past the Parkway, out by the castle->Thomond park and then onto the main ennis road

The route on your original post goes through the tunnell, pretty sure bikes aren't allowed

I haven't cycled down there, but your suggested route takes in a lot of motorway, which is illegal to cycle and possibly quite dangerous. I'd tend to branch off where it's marked Ballycasey beg and take the R458 in.

Thanks so N18 is Ok to cycle on? So its ok to follow it as far as Shannon and then come of when it turns to the M18

Yea already seen that click the walking symbol and you avoid the Motorway and most of the N18

From memory, the N18 between Limerick and Shannon airport is a crazy road. Dual carriageway with everyone p!ssing along it.

A slightly longer, but quieter and more enjoyable, route would be out past Thomond Park, Meelick Rd to Cratloe and Sixmilebridge into Ennis.

Thats what I was thinking alright I know its not illegal but it seems to be a busy dual carriageway.

Yes, and I think there are lots of merging junctions. Not illegal, but not fun either!

I cycle Limerick to Shannon on that dual carriageway fairly often and I find it pretty ok - there's a wide hard shoulder. You just have to be watch out for any merging traffic but that shouldn't be too busy early on a saturday morning. To be honest the back roads through cratloe and sixmilebridge are in fairly bad condition. It will take quite a bit longer that way as well. I've had a few near misses with cars on those backroads and would feel safer on the hard shoulder of the dual carriageway.

Plenty of people cycle along the dual carriageway, shouldn't be a problem

The Cratloe route is the one usually used by Dolmen when they're heading back from Limerick but thats partly because they're not a fan of wide roads. The dual carraigeway would be easier.

Guess you're heading to Ennis for the 11am Dolmen linkup.... If so save your legs a bit as John has a 107K spin in mind via Gort, Ballyvaughan and Aillwee.
