Why not wash the dog and let him in? Sorry I don't understand. The dog was dirty so rather than cleaning him you confined him away from his normal area? Now he's in he's unsure as to why he was punished so is being very quiet. So would I be if I didn't know why I'd been locked in the shed instead of allowed into my normal bed.

Or does he normally sleep in the shed?

He used to sleep in the shed but we brought in during the winter last year and has stayed in since.

We started the same way (we didn't know any better), initially she slept outside, then she came in now we have two and would never dream of them sleeping anywhere but the landing.

Still I can understand that perhaps he is confused and deserves some fussing. To be put out to the shed and kept apart from the family is such a big punishment.

Have to say our lad loves his house outside. It's handmade and we're calling it bespoke now lol because recently the OH extended it from normal kennel size. Now he has warm snuggly bed at back of it and then cool floor space half way through if he wants to change sleeping spot and now also a mini verandah to keep his food dry lol :) If it's cold, rainy or stormy he comes in and sleeps in the back kitchen, but will often bark then late in the night because if he hears something outside he can't prance around the garden to check it out. So two sides to it really, but our lad knows that if it's piddling rain he can stay in and it's always the same because when we open the door to let him out for a wee before bed he lowers his backside as if to say " you must be joking" :) Brains to burn! Suppose your fella wasn't expecting the change. We've one dirty room for Fred - back kitchen, so if he needed to be in out of elements then he can be in there as dirty as anything and it's easy to clean up after him, might be an idea if possible if he's to be kept in. I'd say the quietness didn't last too long :)

He wasn't that quiet today. he was out the front of the house today in the estate going around doing his owen thing. He seen a lady that works for aspca walking back her dogs to the house and he ran over to her to see the other dogs. He doesn't play with other dogs at all.
