I suppose what it's saying in a nut shell is " A 1000Kg cow is not best suited to a bog"

If you land is wet or heavy then a lighter cow is better suited such as an Angus or Hereford

If you land is dryer then it's not such an issue

A small one. With big feet, or twin wheels, or wide tracks:D

I suppose what's be hinted at here is that one must cut their cloth to measure. Tipp man mentioned AA and He as traditionally being the type suited to more marginal land types.

What are your circumstances OP that relevant advice may be given?

Sadly proven by those who do occasionally get lost in one

I have been working with my dad on tillage for several years now mainly Barley, im 22 years of age nw and have been to college but im tinking farming is they only way i could live id hate a (9 to 5) job,, or only and biggest problem is we do not have enough land to be making a good profit, we have 100 acres and we rent another 25ac, but i have always been interested in getting into Dairy (Im fasinated with it), we are lucky enough as to we have no major bank repayments at the mo (touch wood), and the 100ac is in 1 block and would suit, the only thing is would be worth or while with all the investment that would have to take place?? what do you guys reckon??

    I think I posted that?

I was referring to the land type that we have. Its a maximum of 3 to 5 inches of soil and then a greay hard daub under that. Its heavy land from which water doesn't soak easily.

I was referring to the types of cows that we have - we don't keep big heavy cows that would cause a lot of poaching to this type of land. Our cows are all maintained at 6 - 700 kg and we produce a lot of export weinlings from them. We keep a lot of LIMX cows. Some are LIMxBB and some are LIM x CH. We tend to stay away from heavier cows such as Angus, Hereford or Charolais because they tend to put a lot of condition on their back instead of into their calf and this leads to them being harder on ground.

Funny enough, some of our driest land is raised bog. We have about 30 acres of it which grows early grass and has fast rotations, can be travelled on with the tractor any day of the year and has great drainage beneath it into gravel about 4 to 5 ft beneath.
