Hi All, Looking for advice on keeping a pet pig at a play school. The pig will be housed in a timber shed with a 30ft x 30ft enclosure on tarmac . Will it be ok to keep the pig on tarmacadam.
    Regards,
    Liam C.

I'd have serious concerns about that idea, firstly pigs should be in pairs as they get depressed if alone..
Tarmac wouldn't be a pig friendly surface and as said, the muck will be a problem..

I'd say its a non runner from the perspective of animal welfare..

Not that it matters for the reasons noted above (animal welfare and pollution issues), but what breed of pig are you thinking of?

Any of the conventional 'farm' breeds will be the weight of a grown man by about 6 months, and will be a very large (and potentially dangerous!) beast at a year.

Even the 'small' toy breeds get pretty big pretty fast.

I suppose if you put enough litter ( straw woodchips, sawdust ) down in the pen it'll give the pig something to root in, as well as soaking up any runoff...agree with the above about needing 2 pigs, and you'll need to have a plan, how long you want them for,and how big they'll be by then... What're you gonna do with them then..? Holidays ? Have you somewhere rodent proof for feed..
Oh and security...are they safe over weekends ect.
    Lot of hassle really ...

I,m just helping out at the school so I don't know the breed of pig but the Dept. of Agriculture came to inspect the site and said everything was ok. The school had to get a herd no. so thats why the Dep. called. But with the tarmac the pig will have no place to root around .

Pig will dig up the tarmac in no time.
