Did he not look out the window?

Wow , looks like he was landing on a very very short runway and used every inch , obviously planned , the road was closed and mashalled , and you had 100's on on-lookers .

I wonder why he was coming in there

Airshow? That would explain the crowds. You wouldn't have that many spotters there for just one plane, would you!?

It was it's last flight (nearly in more ways than one) and was being delivered to a museum.

Looking at the videos you can see how it happened. The road is slightly raised. To compensate for that you can see how the runway threshold markings are displaced. But I would say you cannot see that the road is raised from the air and while on approach. From above it's hard to see slight changes in gradient. Visually it would look completely flat.

The runway is short for a Transall so they attempted to land before the marked threshold to maximise the use of the tarmac. But the little hill, they never saw, got in the way.

I'd say it was looking perfect right until the point they had the bump.

there's similar footage of an Interflug IL-18 being delivered to a grass airstrip on it's last flight. Great for rotovating!

    Apparently 'he' is a 'she'.

I'd imagine the very reason there's a displaced threshold on that runway is because of the slightly raised ground she ended up hitting!

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it is not permitted to land on any portion of a displaced threshold associated with a runway!

From the looks of the second photo it appears she came within feet of ploughing two spectators out of it also.

Very lucky but also very foolish indeed!

Wow, second video shows quite a bounce!

A she?:D lol! Awaiting the female pilot jokes:p

Correct, the displaced threshold cannot be used for landing but can be used on the take off run.

Seems like someone didn't do their homework. For these sorts of one way flights you would expect a recce to be down on the ground and a proper briefing. That would have picked up the unusual ground features and risk of landing short. Still anyone you can walk away from and all that...

Maybe they planned to use the raised roadway as a speed bump?

From this video, you can see how close the spectators are.

From this video, you can see the aircraft did fly by to check out the landing area, then came in to land.

    Scary!!

    Is this accurate??
The Transall C-160 military transporter plane flew another 30 yards to the start of the runway where 100 yards further on its pilot brought it to a safe stop.

100 yards seems very short tom stop something that size to me.

well don't read much into anything that you find in the Mail. But the C-160 is a STOL aircraft, so landing empty would allow for a very short landing, but 100 yards does seem a little short
