Bought a few bottled stouts in the past they've been kind of bland. Tried Guinness Extra today and it's quite a bit better. Definitely an improvement on cans. Anything available (i'm in Cork) on the dryer end of the scale would be welcome. I've vague memories of foreign extra being nice but haven't seen it in ages. Of the draft ones i quite like Wrasslers and Plain in the Porter House. The stout in the Franciscan Well is pretty meh (altho some of their beers are decent).

Have you tried O'Hara's? They do 2 lovely stouts, one called Leann Folláin. T'other's called O'Hara's Irish Stout.

Pop into Bradleys if you've not already, they should be able to help you out. There's any number of great stouts and porters around. The West Kerry stuff is nice too, and as a bonus comes with a wonderful label.

    Dungarvan Black Rock
    Belfast Black
    Two other great stouts.
Trouble Brewing's Dark Arts is also nice but is a porter so might not be allowed into the stout category by some. It's certainly not as full a drink as the other two.

Nogne Imperial Stout and Porterhouse Celebration Stout are a good bit higher in alcohol content but are superb.

Sierra Nevada stout is nice, altough maybe not as dry as you are looking for.

Youngs Double Chocolate Stout is the highest rated one widely available in Ireland.
Belhaven Scottish Stout and Hook Norton Double Stout are also probably easy to find

Wander into Abbots and have a look around. O'Hara's Leann Follain is one of the best Irish stouts, Whitewater's Belfast Black is good too. Guinness Foreign Extra is a lot better than the normal extra. the normal extra is a lovely beer though. Try some of the american stouts and porters too, something like Sierra Nevada Porter or Stout would be lovely, Anchor Porter is epic, Fullers London Porter is bloody amazing too...

Basically, try a ton of them and see what you like. you can get 5 O'Hara's leann follain for a tenner in tesco by the way, best way to spend a tenner.

Jesus 5 for a tenner, I cannot wait to get back to Ireland for the cheap gargle.

Ive already bought 4 beers today (35 dollars btw!), now Ill have to head back to get an Anchor Porter, thanks Seaneh

5 Knockmealdown Porters for 10 euro in Redmonds of Ranelagh... or in fact 5 of any of the 8 Degree Brewing Co. beers.
I've seen other places do their beers in packs of 6 for 10euro. So it's essentially 2 euro a bottle.

Living in Cork your in the prime location for Mi Daza stout brewed by Franciscan Well for a publican who has 6 pubs around the city, maybe someone here can advise you which pubs it's in.

I tried it at the Irish Craft Beer Fest there a while ago and it was the star of the show for me, enjoy.

Mi Daza is the closest thing to Wrasslers I've ever tasted. It's in Benny McCabe's pubs, so AFAIK that's The Bodega, Crane Lane, Maynes, Sin É, Mutton Lane and The Oval.

Sierra Nevada Stout and don´t forget Sierra Nevada Porter, genius!
    Best of the sweet ones

    here my last delivery.
    Stout samples 2.jpg
Anchor Porter is a total catastrophy, total sweet and bad.
Midnight Sun Porter 5,6% ABV from Alloa Scotland, is ok a bitter taste dominates, not a Porter for beginners :D
Meantime London Stout classical English , with a dominating coffee taste, ok.
Sagres Preta , Portugal Stout? 4,1% ABV hmm bitter, poor .
Pearl Necklage Oyster Stour I have to still to taste :pac:

One hint who has a great offer www.drinkstore.ie i was crying when they told me no deliveries to Germany :(

Anchor Porter is a total catastrophy, total sweet and bad.

    It has a 99% review average on ratebeer.com and a 92% public, 99% Alstrom bro's review rating on beeradvocate.com

It is one of the best examples of an american porter in the world in my opinion.

I always glazed over Anchor Porter cause I wasn't overly impressed with their steam beer. Must pick up a bottle and try.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout is one fine drop

My local off-licencier once told me that Brooklyn Chocolate Stout is actually a black lager, although I can neither confirm nor deny this. Damn fine beer though, as you say :)

Weird, I'd say they may have gotten mixed up, Brooklyn actually do Black Lager. It's very good too.

I have 6 bottles of it sitting across from me right now (and two bottles of stout) which I picked up from drink store on teusday.

    I've drank it before.

    It's a really good beer.

Anchor Porter is a better beer though.

Personally my favourites are O'Hara's Stout (slightly better than their Leann Folláin, imo) and Beamish. I live in Cork too, so you can get Beamish everywhere, and it's usually the cheapest pint available

Leann Follan is great but if you want to try something a bit mad go for Brewdogs Tokyo stout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

That's a bit of an intimidating list to get through but I promise to drink all of those and then I'll get back to you. :D

I just tried for the first time the left hand brewing company's Milk Stout.
It was very much to my liking.
I am guessing that it is only new to me

Not a clue. If it's a Benny McCabe pub then probably.

Yesterday I tasted Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout. Phenomenal good US Stout!
From the sweet representing Stouts a great one!
About the same league like Sierra Nevada Porter/Stout.
