On several threads here, the Philips light comes highly recommended.

For road use, you'd want to be looking at beam pattern more than "L"s (whether lumens or lux). I bought a Hope R4 when they came out, mostly for road use on badly surfaced, low traffic, unlit country roads; It's very bright, but it's a flood light, far better suited to MTB (for which it was designed).

I bought the moon xp 500 from Evans cycles. A fantastic light. It's charged using USB. £100 or so but it's worth every penny.

The Moon XP 500 is excellent, I can recommend it. But his cheaper brother, the XP 300 is also very good. I use it every day on my commute trips on country roads. It does the job just great.

You can test out my one if you wish before you make a decision. I cycle every working day mornings and evenings.

I bought the Light and Motion - Stella 300. Got it online at a great price but still wasn't that cheap. I have found it brilliant, nice battery pack that doesn't take long to get a full charge and gives great light. I use it on unlit country roads and it has been more than sufficient on its own to light up the road. You can also swivel the light from left to right if needed.

No complaints so far with my Led Lenser B7 - use it every evening in the Phoenix Park where there's little street lighting and hoping it'll do the job on more rural country roads in a few weeks time. it's easily focused, so can have a nice wide beam or a more focussed one - easily done while on the bike by just pulling in an out the lens cover. Uses AAA batteries, so have 4000mAh of power which should do me around 3 hours.

I have the Moon 300, believe me car drivers dip their lights when they see me coming. I have had motorbikes with worse lights.

The magicshine MJ-880 is a fantastic light. Came out the winner in a mountain bike UK feature last month.

+1 on the Moon 300. Wiggle have a deal on the front and rear lights for €118 delivered I think. Ordred mine last Thursday and arrived Monday morning.

That light is not suitable for road use. It is for a mountain bike. I would stick with a road specific light only.

I see more happy users of the Moon XP300. It is just adequate for commuting and general road riding.

Dave, as I mentioned before, you can try out my one some evening (can be on Waterford road), if you wish.

Cheers Seweryn - from doing some more reading even on lower settings this may be too bright for road use.

Yep, and it is not just about the light being too bright, but the light beam pattern itself is also important ;).

I have the Magicshine 880 and use it mainly for trails , but i use it on its lowest setting on the way over on pretty dark roads and country lanes leading upto the trails and its a class little light with a wide enough beam !! But true enough if u were to leave it on the highest setting for road use the glare would be abit to intense for oncoming motorists !! Cycle Superstore are doing a special deal this week 158e including delivery !! There a decent crowd to deal with and no problems with getting your few quid back if it didnt suit u !! ye have nothing to lose ....
