    Hi all,

I would love if someone could help me out in choosing the right computer for me. Im fairly handy on them and understand specs but i dont want to spend €1500 if i can get away with spending €750 say. I will be using the computer to mainly use for my videography and Sony Vegas studio which needs a fast computer, also i do a bit of gaming using flight simulators etc.

So basically i took a trip to Pc World and found a desktop called advent which turns out to be pc worlds own brand. The one i was looking at was €999 with a 10% discount. From what i can recall the specs were as follows dual core i7 3.4ghz,ram 12gb, hard drive 2tb, and something like a 2 gb dedicated graphics card. hdmi ports and so on. The guy said its a smashing computer and has more than you need.

I said id check dells site and found a few good deals also but they seem to be more expensive by around €400 if i want to match the advent specs, that being said its understandable that pc worlds own brand will be cheaper.

Has anyone had any of the above dell desktops either the alien x51 or xps 8500. I would love to hear how happy you are with any of the above and would love if you could point me towards the right one before i hand out €1,000.

    Cheers guys

Just avoid Advent at all costs would be my reccomendation, Dell and Alienware are the same company these days so the alienware machines are usually just "flashier" than the standard XPS ones, obviously it should boil down to which has the better spec between the two and better for the price etc.

Well, Dell don't sell desktops with good gaming graphics anymore, they'd be cutting into their Alienware sales. Since they've bought Alienware, the XPS range has been downgraded to mere multimedia machines.

OP, the performance of a graphics card is not defined by the amount of memory.

If you don't to build you own, maybe PC Specialist has something for you? For example, this configuration costs 850 sterling (plus delivery):

Of course, you can configure everything to your likings.

OS installation DVD and a 3 yr warranty are included.

Really I honestly thought I was getting a good deal and had nothing to worry about! So you think yourself I'm best of going with the alien x51? The spec on the x51 is still under the advent but still high so I presume it will have no problem running Sony Vegas with ease and flight sims?

Advent build quality is very hit & miss in my expierience (usually they are rebandged acer, msi among others). It's a risk to take that I wouldnt reccomend :) . The alienware is likely a good machine, although you really are best off self building as said above, its suprisingly simple and you will feel great at the end :)

You'll get 20% at least more performance for the same money spent when building yourself, and you will learn a lot about your pc and have more choice. And if you enjoy saving money then you can save a serious amount of money by building yourself. If you're afraid to do it on your own there is likely to be a regular from the building and upgrading forum who lives near you who would be happy to help (for free obviously).
