Photo Sharing Sites

Hi, at present I have an account with Photobucket where I store my photos, it is a free account so I'm presuming they reduce the size/quality of the image when I upload to my account with them??

I have been away for a few months and have plenty of new photos to upload.

Is there any sites that people would recommend over Photobucket? eg. Picasa or Flickr etc. My main use is just another option of somewhere to back-up my photos and also to send links to the photos for a few family members.

Finally, if I upgrade to Photobucket Pro would it mean the actual size of the images stay as they are so the quality is not reduced.

    Thanks in advance

I would imagine the image quality would remain the same if you upgrade to a photobucket pro, though if you want to up a bigger resolution, I doubt if they will stop you

    I have a Flickr account

Try pix.ie. A good few togs on here use it.

    +1 for pix.ie

It's still free, and if you've questions then you've a dedicated sub form of this forum where you can chat to Marcus who is the pix.ie guru (and CEO!)

flickr is fine, particularly for groups but will have its cost so weigh up between photobucket pro and flickr pro.

    No idea on photobucket.

    I'm a big fan of 500px.
It's big, it's clean, it lets you explore other's photos in a nice way.

There's also pretty good quality on it overall (i.e. no hosting of X-Rated images), so you can spend hours browsing cool pictures without bother.

It also gives you a portfolio option, which you can (and I do) use as your website. Three's a limited number of themes, but a little customisation will hide most of it's flaws!

You can upgrade fo as little as €14 a year - that gives you stats, unlimited uploads and the ability to sell you images via the site.

I use Picasa to share albums with family/friends. Pix.ie for boards.ie and both Picasa and Dropbox for dual backup of some images. Must check out Flickr one of these days...

I use Pix.ie, flickr, 500px etc but still prefer Pix.ie. Nicer bunch of people altogether :)

Photobucket is for disposable images, I wouldn't use it for photographs.

Though this does depend on your definition of 'X-Rated'. There are quite a lot of NSFW shots on 500px.

    I've used Flickr, Pix.ie and 500px.

I really don't like Pix.ie. I don't like the voting system, the design is quite ugly, it's not as user-friendly as the others... and the upload limit is a pain in the ass. Maybe it'll get better eventually but for the time being the '.ie' seems to be its main selling point.

Flickr is the one I use the most. It has more than its fair share of flaws, but it's got a huge community, lots of useful features, and is much easier on the eye than pix.ie.

500px is probably the best of the bunch. Really nice design, fairly cheap upgrade options and lots of very talented photographers. I'm thinking I'll migrate over there when my Flickr pro subscription expires. Just so they have at least one crap photographer.

If I was joining one today it would be 500px. But it's free to join all three so why not do that and decide which one suits you best before committing to a subscription.

Edit: on re-reading the first post, 500px probably isn't the right choice for your needs. Either of Pix or Flickr will serve you well enough.

I use flickr a lot, but can you tell me what the flaws are so as I can minimise the usage of flickr?

Well if you're using it and enjoying it, I wouldn't worry about it. We're not talking about security or privacy issues or anything here.

I have a few gripes with flickr (especially the infuriatingly bad search function) but they're all specific to how I use the site - or how I'd like to be able to use the site. They might not necessarily bother you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭nucker

Yeah, well I know about the bad search function, there is also a minor issue with the statistics. I recently upped to pro to find that people have been viewing my photos that flickr ever claimed

    That's a fair point.
But I'd argue that the 500px stuff is more artful than a large portion of those on Flickr and there are no 'penetration' images on the site, either.

No, I completely agree, the vast majority of it is very nicely done. I still wouldn't blithely browse through it in work though :)

huh ? That items/views in your first image is the views on your photostream, it's the same as your figure in the second image. My items/views shows

    1,472 items / 43,172 views

and in my stats page shows ...

    photos and Videos 62 97 178,954
    Photostream 5 16 43,172

I think you're looking at the wrong number :)
