...in Co.Offaly I am looking for a birth cert for a man Charles Dunne, born 1845 (within a year or so of this but according to his marriage cert this is the year he was born!),from Kilclonfert.

Now, as far as I am aware, Kilclonfert was a parish itself within another parish called Philipstown? His marriage cert says he got married in Philipstown. (he married a Julia Flanagan in 1868, this I know for sure).

But when I go to search his birth cert it doesn't give me the option of searching for Philipstown, where his marriage cert says he was from!

A birth cert comes up from the parish of Daingean however which matches this man's age. Do you think Daingean could be Philipstown as there's no Philipstown in the drop-down list of parishes for birth certs?

I'm looking on Rootsireland by the way.

    Any help appreciated.

P.S. his address on this birth cert comes up as 'Kill' which leads me to believe Kilclonfert?...(he WAS from Kilclonfert)

Daingean was known as Philipstown when Offaly was Kings County

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daingean

The wiki a/c refers to Kilclonfert.

The 2 names are probably interchangable when searching records. Philipstown may be on civil certs and Daingean on church records etc.

no birth certs in 1845 - what you are looking at are baptism records.

Kilclonfert is a Civil or Church of Ireland parish and also a townland within this civil parish. It's one of the three civil parishes included in the RC parish of Philipstown, which as lottpaul mentioned is sometimes listed as Daingean.

Kilclonfert is a civil parish (Protestant and civil Government administration divisions) in Offaly and Daingan/Phillipstown is a Roman Catholic parish.

From looking at the maps in A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland it seems that Kilclonfert overlaps with the eastern part of the Daingan RC parish.

There are four townlands in the civil parish of Kilclonfert (and therefore also in the RC Daingan parish) that begin with 'Kil/l'
Kilclonfert (yes, also the name of a townland), Kilduff, Killeen and Kiloneen.

The Kill could possibly refer to one of these townlands.

    Great minds etc... Shane

Thanks so much! You have all really helped me on my quest to do the family tree. I'm a bit clueless but learning as I go along. The history that goes with all this research is v.interesting. Thanks again.
