I think there is a major lack of interest in walking because the way its marshal at races, very hard for a naked eye to call it, need to use modern technology to be fair.

Hehe, Rob knows you can't walk at that pace.

Jaysus I can't even run a km at that pace.

    What's that in real money?

In old money it's 6:53 pace.

I presume "lifting" is allowed since they all do it

There's not a single person on this forum (smart comments or otherwise) who could keep up with Heffernan for 300m, not to mention 2km! What's more there is not a single person here who could run a 5km faster than him. Racewalkers are great all round athletes. There's one kid out here in Australia who is 15 who's main event is the walk, and he still beats the living crap out of me over 400m!

I have a 14.34 for 3k walk from 2008 so with soem walk specific training I think I could ;)

There is a serious disconnect with the walk though. I personally don't see the point of it. It's nearly like retro running for me.

I agree they are good athletes. I respect the athletes but have little time for the event if that makes sense, it just doesn't grab my attention.

Colin Griffin is running the Dublin marathon and I expect him to be well ahead of me and most people on here except somebody like bazman for example

    What's his 5k pb?

    What's his 5k pb?

Don't think he broke 5k as a junior and that would have been last time he ran.
I know he broke 25 for 5miles though.

But what constitutes walking. Did every slow mo at the olympics not show they were all actually running? albeit with a different style to a conventional runner.

, need to use modern technology to be fair.

In fact, this must be the only sport NOT clamouring for video evidence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭rom

One of the guys ahead of rob in the 50k got a paddle for lifting but as you can't get more than one paddle from one marshall (I think) he was lifting past him each time as he couldn't do anything about it.

Keep thinking of this when I hear lifting.

Why is there a big penis sticking out from under that rock the turtle is standing on? I feel slightly disturbed as I kept watching it thinking it was relevant to the short.

I'd much rather see Rob Heffernan turn his considerable talent to legitimate events than see any other talented young athletes move to the walk.

I think this is sometimes forgotten. These guys can run damn fast too. It's only logical. Doing their best not to run and they cover 5 km in 18/19 mins. Unreal!

I believe one of the worlds greatest athletes and the greatest welterweight boxer of all time Floyd Mayweather could walk a fast 5k.

I dont think you understand the thread. Rob is looking at athletes who have the potential to be good racewalkers. Floyd has not raced walk yet since he is a great athlete he would have the ability. He has excelled in the boxing ring, the wrestling ring, dancing ring and is a great runner. Are you disputing this?

Floyd is the biggest star in world boxing by a country mile so to dismiss him as a great athlete is really underscoring the excellence in the sport of boxing. Maybe your a fan of Sugar Shane who has taken plenty of sugar in the past!

I'm sure walshy of all people would appreciate the athleticism of the top boxers! I'm sure he was querying the 5k walk PB claim.

All I was doing was responding to Pico and his post. Not a fan of race walking in general, but they are tremendous athletes. It's astonishing to think that they can walk 5 k in 18/19 mins; 10 K in 37/38 mins.

As to Floyd: Yes, always a dedicated road runner. He is known to run at any time of the day. Part of the reason that he has such good stamina; controlled stamina too. Oh, and he has overall fantastic feet and coordination. I would pick him to trounce Rob in a lateral/backward walk!:)

Joe Calzaghe is another demon for the runs!

    Oh Dear

Where did I mention that Floyd has walked a fast 5k?

I stated that his athletic ability could conceivable be transferred to race walking such are his athletic talents. Rob was calling out talented athletes for tryouts and Floyd could be successful although if he were to change from boxing to race walking he should be sent to the nut house.

Where is this PB nonsense coming from? Nothing worse than distorting facts to undermine woodchoppers argument

You asked for sources which suggested Floyd could have the ability to transfer. I gave a list of his athletic versatility. Case dismissed

Also I see posters who I have outfoxed on other threads getting Sour and thanking this vague reponse in order to morally rally against myself.

What are you on about, seriously?

You mentioned Floyd. I simply wanted to read up on what you said about him. That was all.

Ignoring the Mayweather debate, I will put up 1000 euro for anyone, including Rob Heffernan that can walk 5km at his Irish 50km record pace.

The stipulation is that you have to actually walk it. You will be recorded and the video checked for lifting.

    Genuine offer.

The main problem with race walking is the training. Rob is a brave man for doing what he does. At the end of the day race walkers look a bit ridiculous and its a lot of people's own inhabitions that stop them from joining the sport.
