No Student Leap Card

Why is there no option for Student Leap Cards available? Or are there plans in place for one? It has "Leap" printed on my student travel card despite there being none available. Also, on the Leap website I believe it has said that there will be a student card made available "soon" since the site and card first launched, which is no short period of time.

The Leap card does not significantly reduce my fare and doesn't really make life any easier for me, financially, as a student.

There is a student ticket scheme for Dublin Bus but not for Luas for which I must use the Leap card.

The student travel card also functions as a leap card. There's no need for a separate Leap card.

The student cards with leap printed on them are leap cards.

    I wasn't aware of that!
Still, I don't use the LUAS often enough to get any of the 7/30 day tickets and there's no discount on single journey.
The 30 day non-consecutive rambler on Dublin Bus for €86 is extremely good value.

Does it offer a student rate for the luas since its a student card?

For weekly and monthly tickets it does

For weekly and monthly tickets it does
My son was paying €2.40 per trip with the leap card (2 trips per day, 5 days a week) on Dublin bus...not much of a saving for a student. We changed to a 5 day rambler ticket for €17.20 per week.

The student card allows you to buy student weekly and monthly tickets on Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and LUAS.

It also acts as a LEAP epurse allowing you to use it to avail of the discounted adult LEAP single fares.

There are no student single fares in the Dublin commuter Short Hop area.

The LEAP card does offer a discount on single cash fares on the LUAS.

AFAIK Luas only provides child and adult rates. Counting adult from 16 up. they don't have student rates.

Is your son 2nd level or 3rd level? There's no reduced cash fairs for 3rd level at all. It's always been done via the prepaid tickets, which required a valid student travel card.

Problem with the student travel card, is the scope is for all students that are 16+ and doesn't offer scholar fares that would be avail to 2nd level students when paying by cash.

There is no similar initiative for Luas though.

There are 7 day and 30 day student LUAS only tickets available, priced according to the number of zones needed, which are consecutive. Unfortunately only DB have the non-consecutive tickets. LEAP does still provide a discount over the cash fares however.

    Hi guys,

one quick query i had to ask was, im applying for a student travel card, but am still 15 and im allowed to pay child school fare still, with the student travel card, can i still pay child fare?,

    thanks guys !

The Student Leap card is for 16 upwards so technically no you are not meant to be able to get €0.70 fare off it.

What you can do is put on Travel90 scholar ticket onto your leap card which is for 16 to 18 year olds in secondary school but not 3rd level (college).

The Scholar Travel90 tickets are still paper only and require scholar ID.

The tickets that go onto a Leap Card depend on the type of Leap Card.

Any kids tickets, need a child card. I don't think there's any transferred to Leap yet.
Any student (3rd level) tickets, need a student travel card. Only Ramblers, 5Day/30Day as far as I know.
Any adult tickets, need an adult card. Ramblers, 5Day/30Day and apparently Travel90, although I've never seen anything about it other than mentioned here on boards.

    Edit,
Also a 1 day family ticket, for adult cards.

As yet there has been no official mention of Travel 90 ticket availability on LEAP.

Don't worry it works I've done it many times, borrow my dad's card and buy a child fare. Just explicitly ask for a child, once I asked for 1.30 and got an adult 1.45 which wasn't valid far enough
