    Faroe Islands vs. Ireland

    Last Irish game on Terrestrial

Ireland played the Faroes today live on RTE2, it was not live on other channel in the UK or Ireland but was shown online in the UK.

I Live in Belfast, I have sky with has RTE channel on channel number 161 and 162. Regardless if the game is being shown on SKY sports or not the RTE channels are blocked out. Until now that was fine as i could watch the matches on RTE Terrestrial.

    My question

From next week i will get RTE 1 and 2 on the British Freeview service. I am aiming to get saorview but am unsure if I can pick it up were i live.

What i wont to know is
will sporting content like Ireland games be blacked out on the free view service like it is on the sky platform. Here in the north? Would it be technically possible or is it likely to happien?

    thanks

I am afraid it will be blocked. The N.Ireland "mini" mux or NIMM as its referred to will be the same as RTE on SKY in NI, therefore any content with "rights issues" (mostly sports) will be blocked. The only way around this is to receive Saorview (Irish Freeview) directly from the transmitter in Co. Louth, Clermont Carn. As you have an RTE aerial at the moment and you can get RTE analogue you should be able to get the Saorview service after 1pm on the 24th. However you will need to have a Freeview HD capable tv or Freeview HD box to receive it (the same for NIMM). Most "experts" on this forum believe Saorview will be widely available in Belfast from the 24th as Clermont Carn is going to be a very powerful transmitter at 160kw (Divis the most powerfull in N. Ireland is 100kw).
The added bonus of getting Saorview direct is that you will get RTE 2 in HD while on the NIMM all channels are SD.
Good luck on the 24th! :)

Many Ni viewers will have problems if they autoscan their freeview hd boxes and pick up the NIMM rte first.

To overcome that they should add the Clermont mux manually (by adding/scanning Ch 53 i think) after deleting the NIMM rte.

Some Freeview HD gear will refuse to show Rte at all...save the Minimux.

As you get analogue there's a good chance you'll get Saorview

    This from Saorview
At Clermont Carn, changing SAORVIEW to channel 52 (which has significantly fewer power restrictions) will vastly increase coverage of SAORVIEW into N. Ireland as well as strengthening SAORVIEW coverage in counties Louth, Meath and north county Dublin.

    Clermont Carn Timetable
    ASO: 24th Oct 2012 10:00
    Ch 52 switch-on: 24th Oct 2012 13:00
    Ch 53 switch-off: 7th Nov 2012 13:00

No you cannot get the existing Ch53 Saorview service in Belfast as it is nulled to the North, best to wait until after 1pm on 24th for Ch 52 high power as I already stated.

Do you know which Freeview HD gear? I have a Sony Freeview HD TV and a Sony HDT 500 PVR. Both receive Saorview at present. Will they not show it after a retune on the 24th October?

No idea, but the NI Minimux RTE which is Dbook compliant could bump the 'native' Saorview off the EPG where one can receive both.

Were I capable of receiving Divis and Clermont (CC) in the past I would hold off buying a Freeview HD box if I had not bought one by now....at least till CC is on Ch 52 post 24th of October and the test results are in on how CC Saorview co exists with the Rte Minimux from Divis by make and model.

The Technisat model mentioned in this thread is the only specifically Freeview HD branded receiver I'm aware of that had/has serious problems with Saorview (seemingly just a software issue).

A Freeview HD receiver will receive the NIMux as part of the Freeview service & assign the appropriate LCNs. Saorview will be received as, well, Saorview. No reason for the receiver to be confused (probably can't say the same for the owners).

The good Freeview HD boxes will display ALL channels scanned in eg Humax and even the humble i-Can. They are designed for multicountry reception.

    The trick is to:

    a) Run an autoscan and see what happens: Saorview will probably be in the 800s but on the EPG.NIMM will be in the EPG, have series link and be easily recordable

    b) If that doesn't work, reinitialise the receiver and manually tune the channels. You need to obviously know the RF channels: these will be 21, 24, 27, 23, 26, 29, 39 and 52 for the Greater Belfast area on the 24th AFTER 1300.

    c) Anybody with decent CC analogue in Belfast is going to get Saorview on the 24th with either Freeview HD or MPEG4 TVs. CC DTT will be 160kW, same as analogue, no 7dB down rule like in the UK. This should give belter results just like the new Divis stations.

I can't think of any reason why the NIMM should "bump" Saorview services on Freeview HD receivers - the NIMM channels have already had LCNs for Freeview HD receivers allocated while most such receivers that can pick up Saorview services will place them in the 800's where some viewers can then move them to a different number. Freeview (HD) receivers that have the Digital Tick logo don't as a rule place non-UK originated transmissions at any specified LCN number carried in the multiplex if the country setting of the receiver is set to 'United Kingdom', hence why Saorview services end up in the 800s range in most cases - the LCN allocations in the Saorview multiplex is by and large ignored except possibly to order the channels stored in the 800s range at the time of tuning e.g. RTÉ One at 800, RTÉ Two at 801, TV3 at 802 and so on.

This time next week I'll expect the NIMM channels from Brougher to be at 51, 52 and 53 while an automatic scan should put Saorview channels from Carin Hill initially into the 800s and then I can move them lower down afterwards.

Thread title should be analogue terrestrial as digital is terrestrial also.
