Acquiring EB licence under new rules

Hi guys. I have a category B full driver's licence. If I wanted to get the EB category, how would I go about that?

I did my Theory Test in October 2009 so I assume the certificate has expired.

From what I've read, it goes as follows: Get EB Learner's permit by doing B category Theory Test, maybe get lessons (no wait for 6 months or mandatory lessons), apply for and pass test then go to the Motor Tax office. Is that correct?

    Thanks for your time.

    You are fairly accurate there.
I dont think you will need to do another Theory Test though...just appy for an EB Learner Permit.

I passed my C test in 2003 and took out an EC provisional. I never took any EC lessons and my provisional expired in 2005. I now wish to take the EC test. I went to take out an EC permit but was told I will have to do the C theory test again 'as my provisional had expired over 5 years'. However I was told that 'if I was now applying for my first EC learner permit I WOULDNT have to take another Theory Test'?! Go figure!!

I've now booked my C theory test.
I mainly want to get my EC so I have EB and EC1 on my licence....and for the challenge of passing the artic test too!;)

    With regards the EB test...
The new 'credit-card' driving licence is coming in on 19-1-13 and will include new category rules. If you take out EB permit or full licence AFTER 19-1-13 you will be limited to a trailer with a gross vehicle weight of 3500kg (currently there is no max trailer weight a person can tow on a EB ...just the relevant vehicle manufacturers weight restriction ofcourse).

Failing all that, give the RSA Helpline a call on 1890 406 040
    (There are very helpful).

    Hope this helps!

That doesn't sound right...I'd get a second opinion on that. How exactly do you need to do another theory test in the C category when you all ready have a full C??? All the EC test is, is a truck+trailer!

It's the same as applying for an EB licence, if you have a full B you don't have to do another theory test. I think you were fed the wrong information there!

The clowns in the motor tax office don't know what they're doing at times!

    I thought that too.
I phoned the RSA the same day I was in the motor tax office and they said the same as the tax office. A few days later - just to be sure - I emailed the RSA and they confirmed the same again too.

I'm a bit annoyed having to do the theory test again ...to say the least!

Never knew these new rules were coming with the new licence! I was planning to do the EB at some stage but wasn't too pushed, have a provisional thats out a few months, does anyone know if I renew it and do the test now will I come under new or old regulations?

its stated on the RSA site, that if you've a full B license before the 19/01/2013, then the new changes to licenses don't affect you, even though you'll be taking out a trailer license after this date. although its all mute really, as i know of very few instances where a jeep/van can draw anything with a DGVW over 3500kg anyway!
on the trailer lessons, and hire, i do it! PM and we'll sort something out!

    Good Luck either way!
