in fairness to him, trapps record against the minnows is very good!

Faroes having 2 games in four days is very tough for them, their manager explains why in the above link...

Faroes to be woeful, us to get a 3-0 minimum, Trap uses this as justification to avoid the boot and keep the bandwagon to hell rolling.

Robbie Brady to score. Trap uses it as proof he actually does believe in youth, before refusing to play the kid for any more than five minute run outs at the end of every future match.

A tough 2-0 victory against very tricky opponents, renewing optimism for the March double header against Sweden and Austria.

i think so after some of our previous campaigns yes! how many times have you seen England and other so called major teams struggle to beat or even draw with the so called "sure bets"? we only think this is an irish phenonomen because we dont follow the other teams anywhere near as closely!

also going to be optimistic.. 2-0, 3-0 or 3-1 to ireland

its up to the players to perform now, not gonna lay into trapp the players have no choice but to go out and give us a performance that we need

It must be said the days when anything less than 5-0 seem to have disappeared. These teams will still never win but they seem to take pride these days in trying to get a point, whereas in the old days they were nearly like a bunch of competition winners overwhelmed and greatful that the likes of Zidane and Roy Keane would be coming to their little town.

Even at that though I would consider any mid ranking team not putting three or more behind the likes of San Marino and the Faroes to have a questionable set up. If Trap actually starts/allows the likes of Brady and Long to actually play ball it could be quite a high scoring affair. Which tbh Im not sure I want, as it only provides false dawn that Trap is going to permanently change his tactics when he clearly will not.

I want the 3 points, but in a manner that still allows Trap to be shown the door in time for the next qualifier. I dont want to see awful football but neither do I want to see a cricket score that keeps the dinosaur in the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 276 ✭✭Wade in the Sea

Even if it's 1-6 tomorrow, Trap is finished. He's nothing more to offer. I am not saying he hasn't done a good job compared to some of his recent predecessors but the difference was he was the only one on this island who didn't believe. And who could blame him. He is Italian, what is Ireland, except a "little country who gets lucky from time to time" Had he watched us in the past, spent a few hours in the premiership/championship watching his players he might have realised that we were capable of more. Take care old man it's been a blast but time for you to head off now and take care of your vines!

Sticking the Faroes and San Marino in the same grouping is madness.

San Marino are a true completely useless minnow.

Faroes exist in that wilderness of team who gets 1 or 2 decent results each campaign but being European have little chance of qualifying for anything when only 13 of 53 qualify.
But in their last World Cup campaign their home fixtures were 2-1 v Lithuania, 1-1 v Austria, 0-1 v France, 0-1 v Romania and 0-2 v Serbia.

They are streets ahead of San Marino; comparing the 2 is an insult to them.

Good point actually, they are a cut above SM, Andorra, Liechteinstein, Luxembourg. Without checking I think they are the only one of those to have a semi pro league. I still say anything less than three for a mid to top ranking team is a worrying return mind (France were pretty sub par in the WC 2010 campaign on the whole, for example, so a mere 1-0 is very indicative of the issues they were having with Domenech and his management at the time)

Met Brian Kerr here in Oz a few months ago and he was decked out in Faroes training gear. Having heard his comments on Trap over the past week I wonder if he'll do the same tonight :pac:

This is very true but it shouldn't surprise anyone. The Faroes are a great example of how far grit and determination can get a team performing above what ought to be their capability. It means they can go away and not be embarrassed and actually look to be competitive in Torshavn. I don't think that most teams look forward to going there. It's remote and I can't imagine that the pitch is conducive to playing slick football.

I honestly wouldn't count the Faroes as being a minnow at this time. That said, Ireland should still beat them handily by a couple of goals. Very important to grab one early though.

Hope the lads win and win well.

I still think Trap should go even if they win 5-0.

But I fear that the worst may happen and we may lose :( . Nothing surprises me with this joker as national team manager.

It's a must win game and won't be easy with them on a high after a good showing against the Swedes, and us on a low.

I believe we will get the win. My main concern is Westwood as I thought he was very poor against Germany in a display which went largely under the radar. I'm counting on a better outing this time from him.

As someone fully behind Trap and the boys I wish the lads well. It's also critical that the Germans do the business against the Swedes.

Sweden lose to Germany and we'll beat the Faroes will put us in a decent position.

Thats before the most important games of the group, playing Austria and Sweden and trying to secure a 2nd place finish.

We we're honestly never going to beat the Germans and even a draw was been optimistic but the manner of the defeat on Friday was the most crushing point.

Anyway, 6 points from the first 3 games wont be to bad, hopefully we help our goal difference as a -4 after 2 games is woeful.

Same. Still have a chance of qualification, his reign ends when our WC 2014 ends.

Is that when it's mathematically impossible to qualify or after the whole thing?

exactly. its a lose lose for Trappa tonight, even if we win people will criticise.

this lot gave germany a better game than we did and rattled the f*ck out of Sweden, Sweden only equalised while the faroes had a man off the pitch injured.

id like to think we will win this 3-0 but this could be a very very tricky game.

I'd let him walk when it was mathematically over; but in practice he will be let go when the campaign is completed.

Find that hard to believe, there are a lot of valid criticisms of Keane, his commitment cannot be one of them.

I don't think there's anything suspicious about that. Four days is a lot of time for healing, especially with modern physio.

The quotes from their source don't even match the claims they are making.
"Look, what happens if Ireland win 10-0 against the Faroes or something like that?" said the source.

"Wouldn't we all be saying then what a great fellow he was and how he lifted the team back up after Germany.

"I know it might be a miracle following what happened against Germany, but you'd never know."

That does not equate to him being sacked if they don't win 10-0.

As happy as I am to finally to see Ward out of the team after a couple of ropey displays, there is one thing I didn't think about regarding his replacement.

Kerr, writing in the Times today, said he still expects us to see alot of the ball and so there will be alot of onus on Wilson and Coleman to use it well and get forward.

He also remarks that he hasn't seen Wilson get forward at all for Stoke.

My reading of it = perhaps Ward would have been better as he is decent going forward?

On the otherhand, with the team likely to be nervy and Coleman likel yto attack at every chance, maybe its better to have a more defensive minded player at left-back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,931 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

I think we'll win this 2-0. Walters and Andrews to score.

First goal in this game will be crucial. If Ireland get it, then the Faroes might go on the offensive and leave holes at the back, leading to a 3-0 win for Ireland. If the Faroes get it, then the Irish nerves will kick in and they will have a tough time breaking down a stubborn Faroes defense. Result could go either way, depends on how much time is left after the Faroes score.

One thing that will work in Ireland's favour is that the Faroes will more than likely start to fatigue in the second half after playing tough against Sweden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I'm going to go out and say we'll score early and manage to win 4-0.

Faroes had a huge game against Sweden 4 days ago in a competitive game for them.

Ridiculous statement. Robbie Keane has a lot of critics but he has never shown anything less than 100% commitment to Ireland and is taking a painkilling injection to get through tonights game.

Baffles me the amount of criticism he gets. He is the record goalscorer in all the British and Irish Isles and has consistently popped up with big goals when needed
