Just checking for my elderly neighbours, they are a bit unsure and panicked about the digital switch.
They have a sky box and a Sony Bravia tv I think it's 3-4 yrs old.
The tv doesn't have the saorview sticker on it,do they need a new box or have they got the capability already.

If they are paying for Sky. They are fine.

if they arent, and Just recieving the free channels. then yes, they will need a Saorview box if the tv isnt Saorview approved

Post the exact model no. of the TV or check the specs in the manual for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC under Colour/Video System on the Specification page at the back of the manual.

Have they the Irish channels on Sky box?

I have 2 non-Saorview approved Sony TVs working with Saorview, one four and half years old (early 2008) the other two and a half years old (early 2010).

    Thanks folks,
They have the Irish channels as well the others on sky.
    The tv model is KDL-32v4000.
It says LCD digital colour tv on the back of it.

Before you buy any box, in the tv menu make sure country is set to Ireland and then do a channel scan in digital, if it picks up channels but sound only then they will need a box (if they don't have RTE on SKY).

Not compatible with Saorview I'm afraid, MPEG-2 video decoder only (Saorview uses MPEG-4). Saorview STB will be required with that TV.

    Thanks,
So even with the sky box they still need the saorview.
I have it already built into mine but would there be much involved in setting it up for them as they will need me to do it for them.

If they have the Irish channels on Sky, they don't need Saorview. They should know that these channels are part of their subscription package & should address these kind of questions to Sky, who they are handing money to every month.

If they have a Sky sub they will still have the Irish channels via the Sky box when analogue via the aerial is switched off next week. Saorview won't be required.

If they are recieving rte, tv3 etc through there sky box there is no need to do anything as sky signal will not be affected

For some reason there seems to be a good few people in this country who think they need to buy a saorview tv and install a "digital" aerial even though they are getting their signal from sky or upc and paying them monthly for it.
