Buying a new TV to receive Saorview and NI DTT

For people in Meath looking to buy a new TV that will receive Saorview and the Freeview signal from NI, can they safely buy any model that is Saorview approved?

I realise that Saorview uses a MPEG 4 format, while NI Freeview is an older MPEG 2 format.

Can I presume that all TVs are backwards compatible?

What worries me is what I read below from www.saortv.info, which refers to DVB - T2 tuners?

    N.I. Digital

If you are in a location that can receive Saorview and “Freeview”, the only “safe” receivers are “Freeview HD” (not Freeview in a so called “HD Ready” or “Full HD” TV as that can’t receive Saorview at all and will never receive N.I. HD via an aerial). If you are technically minded then possibly a Saorview set-box or Saorview TV if it has a DVB-T2 tuner, not a DVB-T tuner. The standard Saorview receivers can receive Freeview, but not “Freeview HD”.
An Addon “Freeview HD” setbox for SCART (non-HD TVs) and HDMI connectors (true HDTVs) to allow “Freeview”, “Freeview HD” and Saorview reception is about £70 to £100

Assuming that you can get Freeview in your location this thread should help.

All Saorview TVs will be backwards compatible with the Freeview SD MPEG-2 channels from NI.

One NI mux/frequency will transmit the HD versions of BBC1/2, UTV and Ch4 in the new DVB-T2 standard. They will be duplicates of the existing SD channels. So if you currently have a Saorview receiver you will pick up the Freeview SD channels, If you are buying something new it would be a good idea to purchace a TV or STB with a DVB-T2 tuner. Some Saorview approved TVs have DVB-T2 tuners, UK FreeviewHD certified receivers have a DVB-T2 tuner by default. All this assumes of course that you have Freeview coverage from NI.
