From a dealer or private sale?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Antigone05

sorry should have said, a dealer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

Ok well once you have agreed to buy and settled on a price and warranty you hand over payment. Check if your payment type is accepted by the seller, some may not take credit cards for example, then get your reciept making sure your warranty cover is clearly stated on it. Fill out the tax book/vlc. The dealer posts this. Make sure you have your insurance swapped over also

Sort the paperwork, verifying the service history, determining if the dealer actually has the registration documents, doing your history check etc BEFORE you pay for it.

And it's real name in not taxbook, neither logbook, nor vlc, but Vehcile Registration Certificate.

    Know your Certs.

    Part one.

    Vehicle registration certificate (old type)

This was issued on new cars before April 2004. It is merely a receipt of the car being registered and has absolutely no value or purpose once the car is taxed for the first time.

    imagexao.jpg

It's quite common for sellers to have this and not the actual cert that's needed to change ownership.

    Know your Certs, part two

    Vehicle licensing certificate

    imageaoc.jpg

This was issued to new cars before April 2004 and has the same function as the current Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Any changes in ownership since April 2004 result in a new type VRC being issued.

Thanks! I'll have to tear the place apart.

Does anything else need to change hands when buying a new car, if not, do i then go to the tax office?

    Know your Certs, part three

    Vehicle Registration Certificate (new)

    Media,3081,en.jpg

This is issued on all new cars and changes of ownership after April 2004

It (as with the Vehicle Licensing Certificate) documents the number of previous owners the car has had.

Ie a car with 1 owner will show as 0 previous Irish owners, a car with 4 owners will show as 3 previous owners

So to repeat, the first one is worthless, the second two are what you need.

If you don't have the cert, you need to complete an RF134 form for replacement documents,
Bring it to Garda station, get it stamped, then bring it to the local tax office where they will take roughly €13 from you and get the dept to reissue a new cert and post it out to you.

Say tax book or log book to any irish car owner and they will know what you mean. Vrc on the other hand will get you a few blank stares!! Its like the fast lane, Road tax, vice grip. none are the correct terms but almost everybody will know what you mean!

But yes vehicle registration certificate is the correct name!

Super! This helps, I know I have the 3rd one you put up, do i still need no 2?

Unless your driving the car out of the yard you'd need to leave a deposit for them to hold the car. If the car requires any work make sure it's all completed before you take the car, it's much easier to get work done before they have all the money

Would it not be the dealers job to ensure the paper work is done correctly? And if the dealer isn't willing to sort it out walk away.

Absolutely, I'm going on the basis that the OP is trading a car in, and will need to bring papers with them too.

If your car worth 3-4 k, put it for 2.5 k for sale in www.donedeal.ie and www.adverts.ie, put in description also that some work required . might somebody will buy for 2k euro.

BTW what car you have at the moment and whats wrong with it ? did the dealers said 2k + need work on it ? if dealers said so, it could be around 1 k in regular garage to get fixed.

Surely vice grip could be correct for something although I would expect to find vise grips in a toolbox even if said vise grips came in a package labeled Mole Grips.:)

    Wha ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Antigone05

found out the car is previously imported. the site is telling me to procede with caution....why?

it has a irish reg, seems it was a british reg originally.

    is there reason to worry?

What level of check did you do? I did one on a previous car I owned and it flagged a warning, never paid to see what it was as I already had the car.

Ex UK aren't an issue. The service history will be may harder to verify, it'll cost a bit to call and verify. Some have had mileage corrections, but Irish cars have them also. The only other major issue is the UK use more salt than we do so there may be more corrosion under the car, but once you get it checked out on a ramp you'll know if it's bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Antigone05

did a full history check. theres nothing really standing out apart from its import, i did a check on its UK plate and no bad history is showing.

    Seems safe?

well, it is your choice, they are happy receive money from you, but if any problems arise, you'l get FOCK OFF from them....., what happen with that poor chap Stephan aka stiofan85.
Really, it is you choice. if their attitude is such with just log book problem, you can imagine, what words youll get, if youll come to them with some mechanical failure while car on warranty. Make sure logbook is in present, and you actually see that logbook, make sure, reg number is from same car :pac:

    Good luck.

As a matter of interest, do you need to have a licence to buy a car in Ireland or can you buy a car freely and then get your licence at a later time? (assuming that you don't drive the car with no licence)
