Pub PA system

Hope I'm posting this in the right section. I do gigs in my local pub with my own rig. The pub owner has now asked me to help him buy and install a PA system in his pub. It will be used mainly for tv, and background music during the week but then needs to be cranked up for gigs at the weekend. The pub is divided into 2 sections and can hold about 180 people in total. Bins would also be required. Can someone suggest a system or what exactly he's going to need. Is there a website where I can look up set pa's for pubs or anything. I'm thinking amps, mixer, 2 bins 4 tops ( that need to be bolted to the wall ) also he needs to control it from behind the bar and also a control area for the Dj. Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks

Professional companys will charge an arm and a let.

I'll let you know what i have in work cus it sound to be the set up you described.
I'ts all in a rack behind the bar the only thing missing is seaparete contol for a dj.

Just remembered I've got a separate control for a third area that we don't use any more.
I'll upload photos to show you the setup.

Unless you know what your doing it's an expensive thing to get wrong.

Some tops and subs it not the answer for a install.

Zoning, multi inputs for music and tv and correct wiring isn't something that most folks can just buy off the net and install. It's to hard to give advice without knowing the lay out of the venue etc.

Why not find a local installer and provide him with the materials and throw him a few bob for an install.

Also thinking, if it's for day use and then dj use you would need to have it cater for dj use as that's when the heavier demand will be needed.

Also rigging larger boxes to a wall again is not something that should be done by someone other than a expert.

Most off the web boxes are not design to be flown from walls unless your spending lots of cash.

I've seen amateurs installs where the house rig was set up in stereo.......

This is starting to get a lot more complicated than it was supposed to?!!!!!

Ok let say! Both areas are the same size! Therefore we'll say one bin and 2 tops in each area. 2 amps! One for each area.

So in a rack behind the bar a mixer and 2 amps. Channel 1 one the mixer is the tv. Channel 2 is the house music system ( run from a laptop ) and channel 3 is an external source I.e. the dj. In a seperate area, a stand alone mixer ( for the dj ) connected to channel 3 on the bar mixer. Would this work???? It sounds like it would to me, but is there anything I'm missing?

It's not just a case of leaving the speakers around the place though.. It's okay that you want to do this cheaper than paying a professional, but the way you're describing the work that needs to be done is like someone saying a dj just presses play..

    In an ideal world yes.

    Run in mono.
Make sure ohms loads are correct for amps.
Make sure cables are the same length to all boxs.
Make sure cables are the right standard.
Make sure install is secure, rule of thumb, pretend it's a crèche.

This list is extensive can go on and on depending on what's actually needed.

A wise man once said to me there is a reason churches buy 3 pa systems.
The wrong one, the too big one, the right one.

Ok more info, the speakers will be hung from the ceiling, the dj uses a laptop, why won't this work?

mono so you won't have to balance the sound right and figure out zones. so that half the crowd on one side of the room don't just hear the left channel or visa versa.

Speakers in a square room should be setup like (for the example assume it's a box room which needs only 4 speakers, no bins included)
    L----R

    R----L

    rather than the

    L----R

    L----R

which someone might assume you do.

It's so someone can be standing anywhere within that box and still be hearing both channels of audio..

I falsely assumed that the place was wired for everything and it was replacement gear that was needed

So all boxes will get the same sound. For eg, the beatles have songs with drums panned left, so if you ran in stereo one section of the room gets more drums and less vocals.

You could set up in stereo but use mono outs on the mixer but it's best to have the whole thing set up in mono.

True, if not its going to look messy when done.

That would mean boxes with flying points or are you just going to chain them up via the handles?

    Give these guys a shout: http://www.funktion-one.com ;)

But with respect OP, I think this is best left to the professionals. Permanent installs are not easy.
