05 Fabia - loss of power

    Hello all ; Thanks in advance for any assist.

    Wife's Fabia : 97,000k , city driven for work , lots of short trips every day inner Dublin.

    No problems, regularly serviced , now up for NCT.

    About 6 months ago began losing power rarely, especially noted when pulling away from traffic lights, engine would keep running but when you push the accel only putt putt putt and no power ( I didn't believe it till I had it for a while and seriously scary especially in certain traffic situations ).

    Recently this has become more frequent.

    Other symptoms : Engine maint light ( yellow ) comes on from time to time, then goes off. No pattern can be observed as to why this is.

    Red Inspection light under fuel/temp gauges goes on ( blinks) and then stays off ( rarely ) - again no pattern.

    The regular mechanic can find nothing wrong except suggesting stripping the head down to see what can be found. This sounds awfully expensive.

    I am no expert in this area so looking for a: what is next step

    b: who to bring it to ( are there experts in this area ? )

    There are many experts around, but any good mechanic with the appropriate equipment will be able to do a code read and interprate the codes. Yellow engine management lamp is coming on, so it will be storing a code.

    Eml is usually down to a missfire. Needs to be scanned before you go any further

    Is it the 1.2, 3 cylinder engine?

    If so these are extremely prone to coilpack failure which, if not rectified immediately, leads to catalytic converter failure.

    Stripping down the head to find what's wrong is just daft and smacks of a mechanic who doesn't have a clue where he's looking.
