You'll have to be a bit more specific. What year, engine, price etc are you looking at and when you say good/bad are you comparing with other pickups or with jeeps/cars?

the 2.5 is a bit underpowered in my book, a much better drive out of the 3 litre especially for overtaking, the difference in fuel economy is almost nothing in the real world.

Much better acceleration and a more desirable resale

Found a 2.5 at good value, the nearest 3ltr is 6.5 grand more, coming from a 115bhp L200, the 145bhp hilux might be as lively as the driver

I drove 2010/2011 King Cab 3.0 D4D's in Queensland with work, with a tray back and a heavy box set up on the back for survey gear, through all sorts of bush type conditions. No 4wd is invincible and the Top Gear episode means nothing in real life.

I'd normally do about 2000Km in my 2 weeks up in work in the Hilux. We did a lot of proper 4WDing in work and being work cars were more abused than personal cars. They needed regular maintenance of course, had a few small niggles with electrical issues but nothing major. Most of our main issues were suspension/tyre/wheel related due to the nature of the work.

Right now I'm driving an older dual cab tray back 2002 3.0L non turbo Hilux. It's got 261K km on the clock and still goes really well. It's got no poke as its normally aspirated but it goes and goes.

Fuel consumption on the 3.0L D4D was anywhere from 11.2L/100KM to 13.5L/100KM depending if it was highway or lots of off road.
The older 3.0 N/A has gotten about 10.6L/100km (brim to brim fills noting how many Km's between fills).

Here's a pic of how the new one was set up in Queensland:

I disagree about the 2.5 being underpowered. The original 2.5 models that came in round 05 weren't intercooled, think they were 101hp.
We got a few kingcabs up north with the 2.5 intercooled engine (think they're around 130hp) and they didn't feel that much different to the 3.0 which at the time was around 170hp.

I think the intercooled ones have a bonnet vent. I wouldn't buy a non intercooled one.

Yeah, I was driving the 170hp models. dual cabs with trayback and tarp were fast enough without all the weight on the back.

The Amaroks are way better equipped (here at least) than the Hilux and are supposed to be more capable off road. The only downside being they are relatively new so all problems may not have surfaced with them yet. I know they are a few thousand more expensive to buy though.
