Moving the tv, a cable from somewhere came lose, probably back of sky box ( old model 5yrs+) and have lost Sky. No satellite signal being recieved. Black thick cable running from wall with a single cooper wire in it. Looking at back of Sky box there is a connecter to the "dish input 13 socket" but its empty. Tried inserting it but still no sattellite connection.

Now the interesting bit. Girlfriend's parents house, minding it for a few days. HELP!

See instructions for refitting 'F' plug: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm

I have a wire like this at the back of my sky box on the floor.

    plugF03.jpg

Theres a metal collar that covers the cable plus one of these connectors

    F_CT63.gif

both are connected onto the back of the sky box " dish input 13 socket"

I've removed the collar from the back of the sky and put it over the top of the cable, unscrewed the connecter and shoved into the metal collar on the cable and then screwed the connecter back into the sky box socket.

No satellite signal received whatsoever despite whatever fiddling I do with it. Is this easily fixable by someone with zero experience or should I get a technician?

You can't simply "shove" the cable into the 'F' plug. See link to instructions, above.

They screw the f connecter onto the cable. In my case there is a metal collar on the cable. I can push the f connecter into this and the copper wire protrudes a small bit form front of connecter. I then place the cable/collar/f connecter in the sky socket and turn the f connecter screw to lock the cable in to place. Thats the way it was set up but unfortunately there is no signal coming through. Should I ditch the metal collar and screw the f connector directly on the cable as seen on the link provided?

I have no idea what the "metal collar" is, unless you are describing a crimp-on plug that has broken. Anyway, the answer is to prepare the cable end and screw the correct size plug onto it. If you don't have a suitable plug, you'll have to buy one.

Note that the LNB socket puts out up to 19 volts and if, during your ferkling, you have short-circuited the LNB supply voltage, you may have caused other problems. You mustn't connect or disconnect anything while the mains power is on.

Make sure that the screen (woven braid on outside of cable) is not touching the inner core (straight wire bit) Even a single strand touching the center core will short the signal from the dish.

The outer part of the F connector screws down on to the exposed braid of the cable and the center wire then protrudes through the middle of the connector.
They are two separate connections which make contact with the outside and inside contacts of the socket on the Sky box.

They two parts of the cable (braid and core) must not touch together, either on the cable, or within the F connector. I.E - you can't simply ram the cable in to the connector. Correctly prepared, the F connector ensures that the two required connections are isolated from each other and correctly connected to the box socket.
