Ill be graduating after Christmas with a masters and on the 4th of December I will be applying to pac to do a pgde (hdip) in Sept 2013. I just wanted some advice about how hard it is to get a teaching job now in Ireland...

I hear so much about how bad teaching jobs are gone I wonder will spending 6000 be worth it? Ive always wanted to teach.

    Any advice?

My brother has graduated but has been trying to get a hdip for the past 3 years! getting a job will be tough enough but getting as much work exp is a good idea, building up contacts & even your confidence & skills. It'll get you a reference & maybe even a job!

    good luck :)

If you want to teach in Ireland, it depends on your subjects. Irish & Maths = decent enough; English & History = oversupply.

Sociology would probably qualify you to teach CSPE, but it tends to be given to any teacher that has spare hours on their timetable and with the new Junior Cert syllabus coming in, it will probably disappear in its current format.

So realistically you have one teaching subject and to make yourself employable you would need a good second one.

So they expect graduates of sociology and english to go back and do another second subject now??????????? Ffs.

No, you would have never got a job in teaching with sociology even in the good times. Realistically you only have one teaching subject. Anyone on this forum will tell you the same.

You are under no obligation to do a second subject, but if you don't you will be up against a load of graduates who have two subjects, many of whom have English as one of their subjects as it's one of the more common ones.

So make yourself more employable or consider another career as your opportunities with only English will be severely limited.

If you always wanted to teach, why did you pick sociology?
