Hi all I rang my local handball club secretary today to pay this years membership and he said its gone up to €250 this year and every one needs to be Garda vetted. I was just wondering is this the same policy in all clubs this year? Thanks

How much would a golf club membership be? Or gym membership?

If they have a good facility with heated courts, gym etc then it is not bad value.

Ben Dunne charges €135 a year.

The NAC charges €335 for access to a 50 metre pool, a diving pool and a fun/ childrens pool with slides etc.

Golf courses need a huge amount of upkeep.

We are talking here about 4 walls that need to be painted once in a while, and a changing room. If there is a gym attached, yes then it is reasonable. Heated courts? I dont think there is a single heated court in the country. Why would there need to be? Its a sport, you warm up.

Thanks for the replies its just 4 walls and a changing room Notting else very basic.
I rang a few clubs around in the same county, the prices for each club is between 20 and 60 euro. Last year my clubs price was 50 euro a year, how can it go up to 5 times the price in one year?

Ben Dunne can charge that little as he has huge membership, pays his staff very little and has low rent.

there are plenty of heated courts.
shows how much handball you play.

Anyway, I very much doubt if a club would charge that much.

If they can't, or wont, give you a break down of where their fee goes, then go somewhere else. As a member of a GAA club you should feel entitled to know where it is going, especially when it is so much higher than everywhere else.

I'm in a hurling club that has to rent a pitch for matches and a lot of trainings, and there are a lot of equipment costs and so on as well, along with competition fees and the Player Injury Scheme. It costs about 125 a year to be a member, and clubs with better facilities, oddly enough, often charge a lot less (social members and the club bar probably help). We would give a full break down of that fee to anyone who wanted one.

It could be that the club has a big loan to pay back, or possibly legal fees for something or other, and they are simply looking to load those bills onto the membership. But a 500% increase in fees in one year is shocking.

As for the Garda vetting, it makes no sense. Why would every member need vetting? Surely only people training or otherwise working with kids would need it?
