Saorview set-top-box to replace current set-up

Right, my TV and recording needs are very basic.
I want to get the cheapest Saorview approved set-top-box and from the bargain alerts the one in Tesco for 50 yo-yos would seem to suit me fine. When I was in there however, I noticed another set top box that had the ability to record to USB device. It was for 70 euro and also Saorview approved.
At the moment I still record to VCR (hey, if it ain't broke).

    My questions:

Can the box with recording capabilities replace the VCR by using an external USB hard drive?

Can I just use a USB memory stick (have plenty of those) rather than buying a external hard drive?

What capacity drive would I need (equivalent of a 3 hour VCR tape (6 hours LP)?

Have no knowledge of this area, so hopefully you'll be able to help.
    Thanks.
