    hi guys, i think i need to replace the valve seals on my car. I looked up the symptoms which is excessive oil use and a cloud of smoke after long idle like sitting at traffic lights or just ticking over for little while. if this is the case how much i be looking at to get fixed and is it a big job. The car is a 03 E46

    I too have (hopefully had) high oil consumption with a 04 E46. your problem could be caused by the PCV and breather hoses. I had these replaced last week so hopefully it will cure the problem.

    Replacing valve stem seals is a costly process, the mechanic reckoned it would cost €2k, so is probably not worth doing.

    Can they be manually adjusted I.E. with a feeler gauge?

    have a look at the crank case breather

    @hal

    you are thinking of the tappets.

    So esentially they are seals that fit around the valves? I always ass-u-me-d they were the same or had a similar function. Learn something new everyday. :)

    yes they are seals that sit around the stems of the valves...tappets/hydraulic lifters sit on top of the valves this is what the cam presses down onto to force down the valve

    thanks for that , my first port of call is to change the breather valve and all hoses affected. as far as i know it`s never been changed and there`s 115 thousand on it now plus i`ve been told now they`re normally changed around that. 2k for the seals is a bit extreme imo but i`ll soldier on and get those done first, cheers!!

    Blocked breathers are very common issues on your car but you normally give much more issue at high RPM as this is when crankcase pressure is highest.

    If the car blows smoke when cold or after idling for a short time as you say then stem seals are more likely.

    They certainly would not cost anything like 2k to replace though assuming the mechanic has the correct tools and knowalage.

    thanks N.D, the car definitley blows smoke after a short idle and i haven`t seen it happen on a cold start yet. please god it`s only the breather hoses, how much would i be looking at to get them changed along with the valve and if it comes to the seals how much would they be also, in your own opinion, but just a ball park figure.. thanks
