The problem you will run into is that while you are official working the state will not give you more payments. This will apply to rent allowance. Carers allowance is €200 per week if you give up employment to care for someone,(your employer is required to keep your job for you)there is a thread about waiting times for carers allowance and it would appear that 30 plus weeks waiting is the norm.

    Hi there,
apply for carer's benefit, not allowance if you have the right number of PRSI contributions. Get someone here (in Ireland) to see the local community welfare officer (abbeycourt house will give you the contact details 021 496 5511 if you are North or South Lee). Your husband could claim carers instead and you could go back to work if that suited family circs. Ask in Newcastle to see the social worker on the ward. You can claim domicillary care allowance too. You can pm me if you want and I will give you my work phone number, I am in this area of work and might be able to help, this is all very stressful for you all.

My husband t the moment trying to get som money for me and kids, obut 30 e weekly without that we cannot claim Rent allowans and without rent allowans we cannot claim Supplementary allowans. PM'S left click on the name of the person you want to contact select send a private message.(safety note: please think carefully about giving personal details to people you meet on the internet)

As for losing your job it may appear helpful in the very short term, but long term it would be a disaster.

Husband is only getting 188 per week JB. If your salary has stopped, and your maternity benefit is finished, he should provide a written letter from your employer stating when your salary stopped. He should then claim for you as a dependent (124 per week) and for each child (29.80 per child). This will be backdated to when your money stopped, usually. The SW local office will usually do this within a week, if they get the letter from your employer.

In the meantime, e-mail info@welfare.ie and ask for claim form for Domicially Care Allowance (this is a type of extra child benefit if a child is sick, 300 approx. per month) and a claim form for Carers Benefit (approx 100 per week if you stay on your husband's claim also). If you explain in your e-mail that Crumlin hospital has sent the child to England this indicates that you are out of the country on their instructions, so it should not cause any problems in claiming either of these. Fill in the forms, wait months for it to be processed, explain that you are very stuck for money because England is expensive, and they might process forms quicker as a priority case.

You should also keep in touch with your employer, as if they do not hear from you, they can deem you to have resigned. Write a formal letter to the employer, asking for carers leave to mind a sick child.
