    Hi,
Does anyone know if you can claim back prescription/medicine costs where a medical card has just recently been granted? A family member was just granted the medical card yesterday, but she has been on expensive medication for the past few months. The most recent prescription was just last week and cost €132. It would be great if she could claim this back on the card. Any idea if that's possible? Thanks.

contact your nearest health centre regarding drug refund and they should be able to send you a form to claim back any prescription expenses

I think the limit is €132, you cannot get back the €132 you paid when you were waiting for hte card.

Not entirely correct. Depends on when the OP's friend applied If s/he applied before incurring the costs, then they are/were entitled to a full refund. With all the cutbacks, this may have bitten the dust as well. I hope not.

She definitely applied before the cost of the last prescription was incurred - that was paid for just last week. Hopefully she can claim that back. We will follow up and see. Thanks for your help.

Just in case anyone is interested.....no joy with this claim unfortunately:( We phoned the HSE and they told us medicine costs can only be claimed from the day the card has been issued. Even the medicines purchased only 6 days ago won't be re-imbursed. I guess this is one of those things to go because of cutbacks:(
