2008 2.0 Diesel is due a service. Did the basic myself last year except the fuel filter (chickened out) and have been ringing a few VW dealers for a quote. very surprised to hear one of them telling me i need a timing belt change.. due 180K or 4 years.... they were the cheapest quote too at €210 for service (Oil/filter, fuel filter, pollen filter)

4 years sounds bannanas does it not? ive only 66k miles on the clock and they reckon €359 to change the belt!!!! sounds like porkies to me but its a main VW dealership...

Its normally every 5 years for the VAG tdi belts. All belts have a mileage OR time limit for replacement.

You should be able to have it changed for a good bit less then that using OEM parts in any decent independent garage.

That €359 offer that VW are running at the moment is actually a very good price on a 2.0TDI. The 4 year interval on these is a bit conservative, you would be safe enough leaving it go a while yet. I don't suppose you know the engine code of your Passat? Or whether it is a common rail or PD engine?

No George dont know. Its a 2.0L Highline 140 bhp is as much as i know. Thanks for the advice... think ill leave the belt for another year... they said they can look at the belt during service for signs of cracks but TBH i know what that answer is going to be!

The reason I asked which engine your car has is that the mileage intervals for changing the timing belt are different for each engine. 2008 was the changeover year from PD to CR so your car could have either type fitted.

The PD timing belt interval is 120,000km or 75,000 miles so if your car has the PD engine then it isn't too far off being due.

The CR engine interval is 180,000km or 112,000 miles so if you have the CR engine then you are definitely ok for at least another year.

Hey OP your engine code will be on the first page of your servive book on a large sticker with other numbers. BTW the fuel filter is ten times easier to change over the oil.

That was a great price for the belt change too.

Oh that rings a bell... i have the newer engine type as it has the lower emissions... was one of the selling points from the dealer!!!

Thanks Corkie... i bought the fuel filter and all, its still stiing at home just never mustered the courage to change it... oil and filter is awakward but there isnt much that can go wrong (threading maybe) but i keep thinking fuel filter priming and air lock or something stupid along those lines... Sounds like its best left to the professionals even though everyone says its just swap out and done!!

You will grand, just undo the torx screws on top of the filter thenget a flat head screw driver to prise the top of the cannister off. You will need to use a bit of force here btw but you will be fine. Just lift out the old filter and stick in the new one.

If you are feeling brave you can undo the small bolts holding on the cannister and empty it out but there is no real need..
