Am I right in saying that it's not just as simple as emptying a bottle of antifreeze into my vans radiator? Do I have to drain some of the fluid out? I got a second hand van during the summer but I'm not sure if there is antifreeze in radiator.

What van is it? There are very few modern vehicles where you add coolant directly to the rad.

You can't just add coolant if the system is already full so if you think it only has water or whatever in it then you need to flush the system and refill with coolant.

Yeah, thats what I thought alright. Its a 01 transit, do I need to drain it completely and then re-fill it with a new coolant mix?

Yes you do, unless of course you know what type is already in there.
Flushing the system and adding fresh antifreeze/coolant is good to do this close to winter anyway.
