I'm surprised our Noel signed up for this! I'm not a rock god but even I'd be telling uncie Gaybo where to stick his god bothering show. Maybe Noel's mammy had a few words with him again!

Its not really a god bothering show. Some of his more interesting guests don't do religion. Besides its either GB or turn up Jonathan Woss / Graham Norton with z-list celebs. Alternatively, Mr. Gallagher could do Tubridy but I'd imagine he's aware of how eh....awesome the LLS is.

That's true, he doesn't tend to go overboard on the Religion

Here are some more details about the show. it sounds interesting.

    http://www.rte.ie/ten/2012/1008/gallaghern.html
In the hour-long interview which took place in Dublin's Merrion Hotel last July, Noel talks about his upbringing in inner-city Manchester and the night his Mayo-born mother Peggy took Noel and his brothers Liam and Paul and fled their father Tommy.

Gallagher insists that when he was growing up in Burnage, there was nothing unusual about coming from a broken family. But his childhood still left him and Paul with stammers, which needed correction through speech therapy.

He also recounts how he played truant for months from a school where his mum was a dinner lady, by sneaking in at lunchtimes and then sneaking out again.

On matters of faith, Noel says that, like most Irish mothers, Peggy raised the boys as regular Sunday mass-going Catholics, until he was a teenager, when his Mum stopped making them go. He also reveals that his wife Sarah is a regular church-goer and he says that he is envious of her faith.

Byrne and Gallagher have met several times already, the first time was in 1996 when Peggy told Noel that if he only did one interview in Ireland, it should be with Gay on The Late, Late Show.

Sixteen years later, it was apparently Peggy who once again persuaded her son to record an interview with Gay for The Meaning Of Life.

"I have never met Peggy but she seems to hold me in high esteem," Byrne told the Irish Independent last July. "When Noel came on The Late Late Show in 1996, it was on Peggy's orders, and I'm sure she had some hand in him doing this recent interview."

Not an Oasis fan, but since he first came on the scene Noel Gallagher has been consistently great to listen to in interview. He has stacks of self-awareness and walks the ordinary bloke/rock-star line brilliantly.

    One for the Sky+.

I saw some of it once. I wasn't overly impressed.

Will be interesting, cos Noel isn't very religious
Yeah, I was gonna ask about that.

That just happened. Well, for my own part, songs that I wrote... I mean, we don’t write together as a team, or none of us say, ‘What are you writing about?’ When everybody’s songs came back, I was listening to the words and they were all mentioning the light or the rapture or the Devil and God and ****in’ this, that and the other, and I was a bit like, ‘Wow! It’s ****in’ heavy, man!’ I’m always interested in the imagery of things in the Bible, and the guy who’s eventually ended up doing the artwork, when we gave it to him, he said, “There’s a lot of ****in’ religious armageddon in the album,” and I was like, “What?” And he said, “Religious armageddon”. I was like, “I ****in’ love it, man! That’s what we should have called the ****in’ album!” But that’s all happened by accident. I don’t know where it ****in’ came from. We must be subconsciously looking over our shoulders I guess.

One of your lines on the album said, “I tried to talk to God to no avail”. As a self-confessed atheist does that mean that you want to believe in something?

See, I don’t know what I am. If I was an atheist I’d just write songs about not believing in God - but I don’t know what I am. I can be convinced by any argument. I’ve listened to all the conspiracy theories about 9/11, and I buy them all. I think it was Al Qaeda and sixteen terrorists on planes, but then when someone says, ‘Oh no, they blew the towers up’, I go, ‘Yeah! They ****in’ blew the towers up, the bastards.’ I can be convinced about anything. I certainly don’t believe in religion, although I find it fascinating that it’s become so powerful in the world and it’s kind of dictated morals down through societies for thousands of years, but I don’t see the hand of God at work in the world anywhere.

So given the right argument you could turn into a Buddhist tomorrow?

Buddhism just sounds like a lot of common sense to me. You know, what you give is what you get and all that. That sounds like common sense to me, but I wouldn’t say I was a Buddhist.

I watched the episode of this with Maeve Binchy and it was great. I find Gaybo a bit cringey, but with the right guest you can get some good insight.

He did another episode with Bob Geldof, and I had to switch it off after about 3 minutes... Can't stand that bloke

Didnt know Noel's opinion on religion but thats pretty much exactly what I'd expect him to say. Calls it as he sees it, a spade is a spade. Legend. Should be a good program.

I adore this series, Gaybo isn't perfect but he has excellent interviewing skills. He has a wonderful way of putting people at ease. And in return they open up and tell him their story.

    I agree MrsD..

There is so much more to Mary and she was so at ease, it was plain to see. I'm looking forward to a follow up interview. Mary has so much to say about the CC and is not afraid to say it. I'd say it was in her house in Roscommon by the look of the background and she looked completely at ease.

I admire McAleese myself but I don't believe any of that guff about her saying to Martin love thy neighbour as they walked through the doors to the Áras for the first time and again when they left 14 years later.

Great interview with Mary McAleese. She was a wonderful president. God bless her.

Can anyone explain to me where the boards hatred of Gay Byrne comes from? By boards, before anyone gets annoyed I mean the 21-35 age demographic which is representative of Boards membership. Sometimes I feel like the only one in that age group who likes Gay Byrne. Is hating Gay(among others) the new cool?

Gay had an interview years ago on the Late Late with Noel Gallagher, and, being the Irish Meeja, for the week before it was all "Noel Gallagher says F#%k off to Gay next week", "Noel does Gaybo" etc. When actually it was one of the best interviews of either of their careers.

I would be interested in seeing this.

I think Mary would have got another term Lapin!............

Martin was an important role in her term - he was no daw!......(imo)....

I love Mary McAleese too!! She was the only one that was willing to get her hands dirty when talking to all those eejots in Stormont here in Belfast. Her husband Martin and herself were the only ones that talked to the paramillitries opposite to the IRA and look at the respect she got!!! She will always inspire me. She is such a graceful lady and a beautiful, beautiful person with a glorious personality!!! :)
Well dare anyone say a bad person about Mary McAleese!! I wouldn't let them away with it! I'm a big supporter of Mrs Mary McAleese!!!
As for Mary's hair - she suits it!!:):)

I agree, and I would have voted her in for a third term if it were possible.
I've met Martin informally and he is a utter gentleman.

I just cannot picture him quoting biblical refrences with his wife.

Thats why I think what she said was just glossy guff. Although I understand why she said it. Despite being out of office, she must still maintain an air of decorum and diplomacy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,776 ✭✭✭youngblood

Listening to her speak freely on the meaning of life there,
I was struck by many things, her passion for justice, her beliefs, her academic career (professorship at 26!), her empathy and her ability to articulate the most difficult of subject matter...

I wondered, was she totally wasted as president of this country?

Bit of a nut on religion though in fairness.

Ah, you're alright. Noel's time will come. (Sunday, 10.30pm, RTE1)

Silly of RTE to promote the Noel Gallagher interview on Sunday without mentioning that the series premiere is actually Mary Mac (tonight)

    http://www.rte.ie/ten/2012/1008/gallaghern.html

Sunday seems to be the regular slot for the series, but they launched it with a one-off Tuesday night episode. They must have been too busy with that 'Brewing Up a Storm' video to promote and schedule this series properly

And this is FACT!!!! When the Queen shook hands with Martin McGuinness I know this would not have happened only for Mary McAleese was President.
It was Mary McAleese that brought the Queen and Sinn Feín together when the came to the North of Ireland easrlier this year! And there was no way you would've seen the Queen at Croke Park in May last year! All of these great visits happened because of the wondorous Mary McAleese!!!

Yeah, that was an excellent interview (and probably the reason Noel G is doing another interview with Gay)

I wouldn't be Gay Byrne's greatest fan - but 'The Meaning of Life' is sublime in comparison to the Late Late Show of late.

It's great the way there's TIME - even if it's only 30 minutes in previous seasons - for guests to talk about their philosophy of life, their background, and what matters most to them.

I love the way this programme has surprised me. Guests who've I've imagined would annoy me have turned out to be inspiring.

I wouldn't have called myself a fan of Tommy Tiernan - but on The Meaning of Life he turned out to be one of my favourite guests.

Whereas on the Late Late Show - and many many other shows - it's just a question of 'get them on, let them plug their latest offering, get them off'.

    looking forward to this

The one-to-one pre-record is the holy grail of interviews. Because it isn't live, guests are not inclined to plug their latest project. And they tend to only do the interview because they respect the interviewer. It gives the Production company a chance to pick and choose their guests, rather than filling up a hole in their weekly show with whoever is available.

And Gay Byrne is a brilliant interviewer. He is smart enough not to talk about religion if the guest is not religious - he asks about beliefs, family, what matters to the guest. The interviewee respects that, and it usually leads to an enjoyable interview.

Good interview with Gay Byrne here, amongst other things he talks about his interview style and how the programme is put together.

I think that with most television and radio shows, I think that most people are selling something. They’re selling their latest movie or their latest play or their latest record or whatever it may be. On ‘The Meaning of Life’, they’re not. They’re being asked with no great gain to themselves to disclose their deepest thoughts about their spirituality and what they believe, and what they don’t believe and what they might believe, and what they’ve given up believing or what they’re starting to believe.

I think that that’s the attraction – that they are being asked to think on their feet and to think quite rapidly because we do not give them the questions in advance. We don’t tell them what we are going to talk about, and they have to keep thinking on their feet and they’ve done so well so far. I think that that’s the attraction.

One of the worst Irish presidents of all time. Great woman for the meaningless platitudes about building bridges. She presided over the economic collapse of this state and admitted to spending her time studying canon law! If she had that much legal ability then she might have been better spending it on reading those documents she was signing. She had some powers and she failed time and time again to use them. Nama, the bank guarantee all went past her nose. Would people have voted for her if they knew she was such a religious nutjob?

I think it's the editing that kills this show. Guest talking; cut back to Gay looking condescending and smug. If they shot the show more like the Late late, I think it would look more flattering to Gay.

Not really when you listen to their catalogue of middle of the road rock.

"Were the drugs any help at all?"

"None whatsoever ...." (Gay nods pleased that drugs are bad) "... because we were doing the wrong Drugs" :pac:

You do know that the President wasn't part of the government so she in no way responsible for the economic crisis or the bank guarantee scheme etc. As for studying Canon Law, she only started studying that AFTER she left her role as President.

    I have you now.

    2. In the interview she admitted she was always interested in it and studied it informally whilst she was in office.
    1. Part of the role of a president is to act as a safety valve for legislation that has serious consequences. She had the certain powers to delay key pieces of legislation to allow further debate. She failed.

The only people responsible for the sh1tty bank guarantee scheme are Brian Cowen and his government/advisors as far as I'm concerned.

The edit is very annoying alright, there are only so many of Gay's nods we need to see.

It should have been longer, but I enjoyed it. "You've heard Don't Look Back in Anger? It's me - let us in" :D Noel always has some great lines.

Yeah, he's a likeable guy and there's no bull**** about him really. Whatever anyone thinks about his music (and that's subjective) he's a straight talker in any interview I've seen of him.
I dislike Gay Byrne though and this excuse for him to suck a few more quid from the taxpayer really bugs me.

Every Gay interview basically boils down to

    Religion
    Are you a Catholic
Do you believe in the afterlife
    God
    Your Mammy
Your kids (and their attitude towards religion)
    Your Mammy
Have you spoke to your Mammy
    Your Mammy

    The man's a relic.
