Personal Trainers

What are peoples thoughts on personal trainers in gyms here?

The little experience I have of trainers in gyms in Dublin is a bit disappointing, in gyms I see most people begin with trainers and then soon decide to do their own thing.
Probably because the trainers I've encountered seem to be more like salespersons talking out their arse.

I hope that its only a small percent of trainers are like this and that there are some good ones around.

What are peoples experiences? any good or bad experiences?

My experience is that it depends on the trainers motivation. In big gyms the trainers get paid f all, and hand out the same routines for everyone. Others want to sell you supplements, additional products etc and that's pretty annoying. My advice is to find a trainer that works for themselves. Their motivation is to keep you coming with results, and attract new clients by word of mouth. It's a very individual thing, and different trainers and styles will suit some people and not others.

My experience is that they can teach beginners to use the machines and thats all they are good for

It's rare to see a REALLY good one working for a gym. They might freelance out of a gym, but it'd be unusual to see one actively employed by one and not doing their own thing.

With any industry tho there's good and bad people at their job. But yes, I'd agree - the general standard is very poor.

Anyone have any recommendations for one on the Southside? Mainly want to get my form checked for lifts as i'm doing. I'm not in a gym just have a rack and olympic set at home in a small garage so one with a bit of a set up somewhere would be useful.

I recommend Aidan in Body Health and Fitness in Sandyford. He is very well qualified and I have found him very good, starting you on good foundation exercises and working on form.

Thanks lads. Both look like good options. I like the look of that gym out in Sandyford. Will contact both and go from there.

Really like the look of it from the website. How busy does it get? Looks ideal equipmentwise. I spend a fair bit of time in hotels and hate their gyms usual setup of lots of running machines, weights machines, a smith machine, a few dumbells up to 30kg and one free bench.

Noticed that the other guy Hanley mentioned is based out of there also.

BHAF is a no bull**** gym, cardio machines, free weights. Never too busy..never empty. Real old school gym and everyone in there is working hard The lads there are sound. I have been a member of a good few gyms and I feel the most comfortable of them all there. I train with Adain on the recommendation of another personal trainer.

I only did a week in BHAF when in Dublin for work. I dont know the name of the guy that was working there at the time but in well over a decade of going to different gyms, after a 5 min chat with him he's the first gym instructor Ive ever met that came across as really knowing his stuff and that Id have confidence in him doing a programme for me.

On a related note, a couple of years back I came across a text book belonging to a gym instructor left on the gym floor. I only flicked through it but what was listed as an examples of strength programmes were all just standard enough bodybuilding routines, not a mention of either a well known program or even something resembling one.
If thats the kind of thing theyre expected to learn starting off its pretty understandable the standard isnt not great

Thanks for all the recommendations of the gym. It's great to see the gym as a whole has such a good reputation, mainly due to the owner Rob moulding it over the last 2 years in particular.

If it's just your technique on the main lifts you're looking for, any one of the 3 of us can help you with that, if, however it's olympic lifting technique you're looking for I'd recommend elsewhere...get yourself to east coast barbell/ironside for that.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending Aidan either, so pm either myself or fitzgeme for his number, he's so oldschool he doesn't have a website or facebook...he still uses a nokia! ;)

    Fitzgeme,

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but I am currently researching gyms in Dublin 18 and BHAF keeps coming up. Would this be suitable for a first time gym user with no gym experience. Just the look of the website with the strongman classes etc I think I may be out of my depth and would be better off in Ben Dunnes doing my own thing bit of cardio a few nights a week.

    Any advice appreciated!

I'll chime in here...of course, you're more than welcome, we have people with all levels of ability here. Come down and have a look at the place and/or do a trial, see if you like it...there's no obligation to join at all. Ask for Rob (owner) or myself (Colin).

The strongman classes are only a small part of what we do so no need to be intimidated in the least.

I'd recommend going down to BHAF and checking it out before considering Ben Dunnes.
