Hoping someone can help me! I recently got a desktop pc (from freecycle), I did a fresh install of Vista on it and I'm struggling to install the driver for my Netopia wireless usb adaptor. I've downloaded the driver for it then I go into device manager and select the adaptor and then click on update driver and direct the computer to where the driver is but it keeps coming up with "Windows was unable to install your 802.11g WLAN + Pen Drive. Windows could not find driver software for your device." Certain I have the correct driver. What am I doing wrong?:(

Did the driver come with a setup wizard? The driver might be compressed within a .cab file or something and installation might require running the setup wizard.

No, there was one system file and four notepad 'setup info' files but they're not helpful.

maybe its the xp driver you are trying to install,
there maybe a driver for vista, is there yellow icons in device manager.
some drivers cant be installed ,if all the main motherboard /chipset drivers are not installed first.
i usually find on installing vista ,theres usually 2 or 3 drivers i need to download, ie not on vista cdrom,
OR install process doesnt detect certain devices.
are ALL the usb drivers installed for the motherboard.
on some setup cds, theres a few folders, with different versions of the driver, try a different version.
try a usb drive, make sure the usb ports are working.
plug in device, then try driver install again.

Haven't had any luck with this. I've tried everything. Now I realise why everyone hates Vista. I will see if there are any crucial drivers that I've neglected to download. Thanks everyone. :)

did you try emailing the manufacturer of the usb card?
i've had some luck with this in the past

    It's a Dell Inspiron 531.

I haven't tried emailing the manufacturer but I will. Windows is just giving me a Code 10 error when I try to install the driver.

GO to dell uk website ,search your model, drivers ,support .
its possible if your pc is old ,there may not be a vista driver that works on it, ie pc was made before vista was released.
try an xp driver for the same device.
ARE all the mobo, chipset drivers installed .
MAYBE TRY DRIVER install ,after booting up in safe mode.
you could try a linux lived cd,eg mint, ubuntu x86 version,,see does it detect the wifi unit.
