    Tv3 21.00

Journalist Paul Connolly carries out a six-month investigation of Rathkeale, Co Limerick, a town that has become the unofficial capital of Ireland's traveller community, which now owns more than 80 per cent of its land and property.

And probably has the lowest crime rates in the country.

    No.

Probably one of the lowest unreported crime rates in the country.

TV3 with theire endless, tabloid sensationalist, nonsense can go f*ck themselves. If The SUN was a tv station, it would be this muck raking joke of a station, I'd rather an alleged town full of Travellers than one full of f*ckwits like Connelly.

Piece in the Sunday World about it, said there was a house with a market value of €70k was bought by travellers for €280k in cash after they "persuaded" the owner to sell. They can persuade me anytime.

No, they interviewed Paul Connolly and a representative from Pavee Point on Ireland AM last week and they were talking about this. Apparently the idea behind it is that the travellers want the town to themselves and are willing to pay above market value to get rid of non travellers.

Cue complaints about "Travellers who don't travel"...

Would it be better for all of them living in the same place ,so we could avoid them?
then build a great big wall around it!

    Lucrative job prospects in Rathkeale.

    Headstone salesmen - very good.
    Lawnmower salesmen - nil.

You need to be sure where you buy the house though, they won't buy or build over the bridge, about 3/4 way down the main street. Some superstition about crossing the water!!!! Pity there isn't another bridge at the other side, lock the feckers in.

hopefully the tax man will catch up with these guys, as another poster said they were calling around to houses at least once a month, made a mint, selling tools,
i wonder where did they get the tools they sold.
often knocked on my door, but i would be afraid to buy power tools willy nilly, can be dangerous to operate if not got from right source

But the €280k would buy a fancy wheelchair while the knees healed...

Not a very good piece of investigative journalism tbh - a lot of silhouettes with actors voices making unsubstantiated claims.

Well, two things that you can certainly expect are that this will be repeated at some point in the near future, and that it'll be called Travellerville or Travellers' Capital City or something like that...   ;)

Typical tv 3 rubbish , when part 3 starts they re show what they have already shown in part 2..... hello , trying to make the program last an hour. Why did he not take the bloody generator back if it was worthless ? Lots of sensationalism and made up stories. A lot of these guys actually hire out the cars to come home for Christmas ;)

Absolute rubbish... this is all true and the reality is these people making a mockery out of us the citizens of this state... I can understand that people dont like tv3 or the sunday world but the reality is a lot of what they report on is true...

He has a tendancy to ham it up all right.

From last night - "Thousands of miles away from Rathkeale - in France".

Perhaps geography wasn't his favourite subject.

They should do it, 80% would be enough of the population to dominate the local politics, They could pass their own by-laws legalising all the fun stuff like prostitution, 24 hour pubs, Weed, gambling etc and it could be a nationwide base for buying knocked off and counterfeit goods.

With 80% of the population involved there wouldn't be much the guards could do...

Come on now Rathkeale your greatest days are ahead of you..

    Go on yup outta dat...

Haha bye laws. The only laws that matter are decided by a few Govt ministers. Local politicians have zero power.

AND THEY JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO GIVE UP I THOUGHT 'WAIT A MINUTE, i'LL ASK THE COPS'

THE IRISH TRAVELLERS? YES, OF COURSE, THEY ARE DOWN ZE ROAD.

AND THEN I FOLLOWED A VAN

AND THEN I BOUGHT ONE OF THEIR GENERATORS.

PLEASE GIVE ME A PULITZER. PLEASE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,781 ✭✭✭clappyhappy

Seemingly the documentary hasn't gone down too well in Rathkeale!!!! The "majority" are fuming as they believe they have been protrayed incorrectly, as for the minority they are just pissed off with how the tv show has shown one side to the town. All the positive aspects haven't been shown and its made out to be overrun by the travellers. So all in all no one in the town is happy about it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

How could the van driver not notice the same car follow him from the campsite two days in a row and then he buys a generator and the traveller helps carry it back to the car, first question I'd ask is why are you following me.Definitely something fishy about it.

Or the fact that i work over 50 hours a week have never stole a thing in my life and pay those travellers social welfare with my honest hard working!
surely you can even see the injustice?:)

You would think that with the recent attention from the media on traveller lifestyles that CAB would of taken an interest in the unaccounted for money and assets that these people have?

Drug dealers cant scratch theyre hole yet these people can just do what they want?

Apparently the idea behind it is that the travellers want the town to themselves and are willing to pay above market value to get rid of non travellers.

Sounds fine... And just to help them fully achieve their independence, let them pay their own social welfare, public services, rubbish collection etc etc ..... seeing as how they normally want everybody else to pick up the tab..

Best thing to do with this kip of a town is build a 20 foot wall around it and put 10% of the Gardai patrolling it.

Result >80 of crime eradicated and we can cut the Gardai by a good 50% and have less crime in the rest of the country and as a bonus save a fortune on court and prison fees.
