DART Tag-on Tag-off machines

Is anyone else getting very frustrated with these machines at various stations being constantly out of order? I have lost count of the number of times I have been unable to tag-off, thus incurring an increased fare.
Is it just me, and can anything be done?

Depends what station is it? Also you can tag off on the validators as well even if theyre open they act like a pole just tag the appropiate side, the booking halls are usually open during the day for people to buy tickets anyways.

Also make sure to hold the card steady for a few seconds to give the machine a chance to read it!!

Happens quite a bit, another guy posted recently here.

I stopped using my Leap Card on trains because I could never be sure there'd be somewhere for me to touch off. Irish Rail don't seem too bothered by it at all.

I have never been unable to tag off on the DART since using the leap card. I've used: Malahide, Howth Jun, Howth, all stations Raheny - Sydney Parade, DL Dalkey, Killiney, Bray and Greystones, so I've being using more than two stations.

At every station there is usually a pole beside the entrance / exit that you use if the booking office is closed. Also as has been mentioned, if the barrier says ticket not required and the gate is open, you can still tag on/off at it.

I've seen it a lot along the Maynooth commuter line with the poles going off line or just not recognising the card. Walking in and out of stations to get to the other side of the gate is a big inconvenience.

Irish rail as a whole is a big inconvenience and their ticket machines are constantly breaking down, this leads to leap cards not working which makes the train less favourable for people and more expensive.

OP you should get in touch with Leap customer care and complain about the number of times this happens, also check your account online and see how many times it has hapened and look for a refund!

The thing is though, it's Irish Rails machines and downtime affects their products too. Unsure if the Irish Rail Smart card is still in use, but it'll affect the annual taxsaver card which requires validation.

annual taxsaver card do not require validation.

I've always wondered why Irish Rail Suburban or Dart services don't adopt the Luas model where all the stations are unmanned with manpower being diverted to ticket inspection.

People are meant to tag on/off with. They just don't bother.

I find it strange that you think that Irish Rail is an inconvenience seeing that you make use of its service quite often. Do you use the leap card?
Im asking to see if you are talking from personal experience or exagerating from what you have read on here.

It happened to 3-4 times a week on average for about 6 weeks. Sent an e-mail to leap card customer care each time, and eventually got refunded the €2.20 after a couple of e-mails back and forth each time. They could only ever say that they passed reports of faulty machines to Irish Rail but couldn't say what Irish Rail did with the reports. No wonder that it took Irish Rail so long to fix the machines - I'm sure not everyone could be bothered sending e-mails/phoning customer care to look for a €2 refund each time!
