Looking for a small car

Hi all
I have recently gone back to college full time and am looking for a small cheap-to-run reliable five door hatchback,
for the traffic jam to Belfield.
It can be as boring as you like, but I really need it to last five years.

I currently drive an 01 Zafira, which is on its last legs, and is more or less worth nothing as a trade in.

What could I get for 4000 cash?

I haven't seen many Mazda 2's around Dublin, but they seem to get good enough reviews. It's very low mileage for a 2003.

Any thoughts?

Not just saying it because I bought one but the Fiat Grande Punto is excellent.

I have the 1.2, nippy for town driving and easily gives me 5.5 L/100KM (50MPG). Tax is only €333 for the year, cheap to fix and they look great too.

The Punto does look nice, but I wouldn't be comfortable with quite that much mileage! I know it does look worse in km. I hadn't considered Fiats at all, actually. I was more thinking Japanese or similar, but I will now. Thanks!!

Thank you, but I was hoping for something a little newer, although if it hasn't broken down by now.... That holiday does sound tempting...

Well they are definitely out there, I got mine only 2 weeks ago; a 2006 5-Door with 73,000KM (45,000 miles) for €3350.

Seems crazy paying that sort of money for a 9 year old Mazda 2 when you can buy a 5 year Fiesta which is the same car underneith for similar money. Low mileage does not automatically mean it is a better buy or worth paying over the odds for.
