    Hi All

Wicklow Gaol Break Half marathon & 10km is taking place in Wicklow town on the 24th of March 2013 (sandwiched between Paddies weekend and Easter weekend).
The Scenic, Coastal & Atmospheric races.... we seem to always get amazing (almost too good) weather for the day. Long may it continue!!

We have an earliest bird offer for the Half Marathon of €30 for 3 days over the Dublin City marathon weekend. Oct 29th/30th/31st
Then the early bird of €35 kicks in until 01/01/13
    €40 from then onwards

Early bird for the 10km is €20 until 01/01/13
    €25 from then onwards

It is one of the first Half Marathons in 2013 and good one to shake off the winter excesses. To see a video of the Event click here

This falls two weeks before Conn HM, might do this as my last training run for that so. Is parking on the day a big deal? where would be a suitable spot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

Parking is handy within a short walk.
I'll email out that detail in the competitors brief

Cool, thanks, will sign up next pay at the end of the month. Route looks lovely.

Signed up for this as part of the three half marathons deal. Looking forward to it though I'm slightly nervous about the prospect of some of the hills en route. Time to incorporate some hill training in to my weekly sessions. Good strength conditioning for the rest of the year - I hope

Hi, quick question about this race: is the route segregated or will it be shared road space?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

The roads are not closed but they are very quiet on a Sunday morning
Some of it is on wide combined cycle and walking paths along the route which give you the best runners line along the course.
    Hope this helps...

    What's this now?

Thinking of doing the half as my last big run before the Connemarathon full, might go for 3 if there's a deal.

I guess i could field this one :)

you can get a deal on 3 x Half Marathons
    Wicklow 24th March
    Wexford 21st April
    Clontarf 13th July

for €99 before March 19th when you enter all 3 together

As of today the Clontarf half costs €30, the wicklow one costs €40 and the Wexford one costs €35. Thats a total of €105 so a saving of €6 to book all 3 together.
If one had booked before 1st january the Wicklow Half was €35 therefore a total of €100 for all 3 (€1 saving to book all 3 togetjer)
If Booked back in october you could have got all 3 for €30 each or €90 total so would be losing €9 in taking up this 'Special offer'.

Forgive my ignorance, but I just don't see the 'deal' here....

    Thanks
Just goes to show there is value in the early birds IF you are willing to commit back in Oct. Most aren't

The Half Marathon series became available after Oct - so it followed those offers

People are entering races later each year. Its a trend. (Thats why a lot of races are short on medals/tops because there is a huge surge).

It is a better deal once Wexford goes up end of this month. And by having the deal up to march 19th it gives people more time to decide.

Thats an option they have and I expect it to get some traction in that period between Jan 31st & March 19th when people know they are ready/fit/happy to commit.

But its still not a deal at 3 halfs for €99, if you offered the 3 at €75 i think you'd get a greater uptake in entries. I have run a couple of your races and have found them both enjoyable & well organised. But €30 or more for a half marathon in current climates is a little steep if you ask me. How can club races offer a half at €20 that includes chip timing and tech t-shirt say? Apart from maybe paying stewards surely the overheads are similiar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

    Thanks for the compliment.
    Just one correction - T'was 3 for €90 not €75.

Early birds reward people for commiting early (same for holidays and all that jazz). What it does for me is create marketing funds to advertise. Fliers/ adds/ online. I start earlier than most and I reckon i attend more races than anyone... It is a full time job to make sure the races i'm involved in deliver and are successful. There is no committee - I do everything and i enjoy it (most of the time). Anyone who is involved in putting together a race knows this is 'full on'. Most would simply hate the stress let alone the other things

I can't speak for clubs and I've made a policy (from the beginning) of not commenting or comparing anyone elses race unless it is a compliment. Sure - I have views but i keep them to myself. The races i organise sit in the middle from a pricing point of view imo.

There are options to enter at given times. Personally - I take every early bird option when i enter an event. It's my choice.

There are races putting up prices and races dissappearing. New ideas coming in etc.

In my opinion the races i'm involved in offer options and that is a good thing. If it isn't for you - you'll find one that is. No better place than here to guide you :)

New routes for Wicklow Town Half & 10km have been confirmed.

    http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/144102275 Half

    http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/144099607 10km

They both go anti clockwise and finish in the Gaol (Jail). Starting on the Quays

Thats makes the Half a lot flatter with no big hill at the end. This time you come down the Dunbur road to finish

Hi there, I was just wondering how hilly the new route is? I'm a bit of a novice and found the half in Waterford a bit hilly on the second 10km. think its my own ignorance at not being able to figure out 'elevation' and 'gain' on the course map!

Ran it as part of my LSR at the weekend, starts at 3.2 miles and then I veer off the route with about 0.5 miles to go.

Miles 1 - 3 flat, with a couple of bumps.
Miles 4 - 6.2, this is where you'll need to pace yourself, there are several climbs, but each one is short lived (0.3miles the longest) and broken up will flat sections. Good news when you hit 6.2 miles you are the the high point of the course.
Miles 6.2 - 10, mainly downhill and flat, but still a few bumps from time to time, but a good chance to make back time.
Mile 11 is predominantly up, but never steep, so very runable, but you'll lose some time here.
Miles 12 - Finish, best to say it's rolling, you can make some time back here and the last 0.5 will be quick.

Just had a look at last years results for the half, surprised to see so few under 1:30 (only 15), is the route that tough or was the weather pretty bad last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

    Both.
Last year was just above 20 degrees. Very hot and unheard of for time of year.
It was a hillier course last year. It's about 1/3 flatter this year
