OK so I have been reading a few threads here and chatting to a few people but there are lots of different answers and now I'm confused..

I recently got back working, be it only part-time, after being on social welfare for about 9 months. I'm paying emergency tax and its killing my wages. How do I get off it??

Background.. I worked for 9 years in the same place since I left school. Got laid off in April 2010. I started on a fas ce scheme in November the same year. This lasted 12 months and I have been on social ever since. I have a p45 from the fas scheme. I have a tax credit cert for 2010.

    Any definate advice welcome.

My understanding is give the p45 to your new employer and you will stop paying the emergency tax. Then in a few weeks when all forms have been sent by your employer and okayed by revenue you will be rebursed by the amount overpaid. Hope this helps

no p45 needed. ring your local tax office. ill give you the number if you tell me where you live. Tell them you have started working in x. Say its your first job this year. Quote them your Employers registration number and bobs your uncle. Tax refunded in next paycheck

Your employer needs to register you as working for them now. I would ask your employer if this is the case. This is the reason why you are still getting taxed on emergancy. You can always ring the revenue yourself and see if you are down as working for your new employer. The number is 1890333425, you will need the company tax registration number and your pps number.

thanks for the reply's. Where do I get the employers reg number? Would it be on a pay slip or do I need to contact them?

Employer reg no. should be on your payslip otherwise ask your employer. The payroll person should of helped you with this. Make sure to ask the tax office to send you a copy of your tax cert as they don't post them out unless requested. Once you have a copy your employer should of been given one as well.
