There are finally some details on the Deenside Wheelers website (www.deensidewheelers.com) about this!!

I've done it the last few years and have found it very well run, last years was brilliant with such a huge crowd and great weather for the time of year.

Definitely be there again this year to finish off the sportive season, don't think there's many more after October 21st anyway. Anyone else here going?

The beginners 50k route looks good. As someone who has never, ever done anything like this before- is it ok to just turn up on the day, pay yr €20 + €2 and cycle the route? It says 11am start, so would getting there for 10am be enough time? Is it as simple as that?

Yes, Turn up, pays your money, cycle, talk, have fun and eat the cake:D

Nice juicy curney cake.....with real butter, and women with tea pots, big tea pots, you know the type with two handles that the ICA used to have and are used in "halls":p

Looking forward to this one again. Hopefully another strong pace from the off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭nilhg

Tea and cake sounds more like my style than a strong pace from the off but either way (or even both) I'm hoping to get to take this in, nice cycling country and close enough to home, what more could I want?

I'm planning to be there. The Deenside events I've been to before have all been very well organised. I rate sportives based on the amount of food available at them, and I haven't been disappointed by one from Castlecomer yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭MB Lacey

Cool, is everyone bunched together or is there a women's and men's race? Do the women set off first so, you know, they can be there with the teapots for the boys? ;) How many riders were there last year does anyone know?
I could probably look at the website to get all these answers... :o

Don't worry about the sportive. You will easily find a group to suit your speed, male or female. Starts are not separated by sex and nor should they be! Deenside sportives have been excellent this year so looking forward to this one. Using up my last family pass of the year.

By the way it's not a race unless you are challenging people?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

And also the venue has just changed to Wandesford National school.

I'm thinking of doing this as I didn't get a chance to do the Tour de Kilkenny back in the summer.

Never done one of these outings before, am thinking of doing the 50KM, Would it be a good one for a first Race/Sportive? Only cycling 2 1/2 months proper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

Yes if the weather is ok. If its not make sure you wear the right clothing and do not go flying round bends on wet roads.

Oh and by the way, do 100. You'll feel great after and these aren't races.

Was thinkin that alrite but dunno if i'd be up to doin the 100. I can do 50k quiet easily but its a big step up, I have the gear for it. Hopefully the weather holds up for it. Does there be many of these sportives on during the year?

More than one a week in the season. Check this forum and also the cycling Ireland website leisure calendar.

If you can easily do 50 you can easily do 100 as there is a food stop half way ish.

That's very true, I think I will start with the 50 and maybe build myself but slowly, my aim eventually is to do the 160km in the tour of kilkenny or Sean Kelly next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

Best of luck with the program. It's well worth it.

Luckily the Sean Kelly and the tour Kilkenny are really flat too.

    (Not!)

Where in Comer is Wandesforde school? On the square? or outside town?
(guess there aren't showers available afterwards this year then?)
Really looking forward to it. Nice route & great atmosphere last year.

It's just by the bridge in the town. You won't miss it.

I don't think there are showers at the school but a Deenside lad could confirm.

Hi Michael. See you there on Sunday. There are a lot of leaves now on the roads round here so I'll try to stay upright!

Weather is shaping up to be very nice, always a bonus!
Definitely if you're undecided just go because there's not many left in 2012.

Yes it should be a nice Autumn morning to cycle the final sportive of the season. Really looking forward to it. Will be wearing the blue and white of Waterford.

Did the 100k with son. This was a cracker of an event. Well organised, challenging route and even a curry at the end. Bravo to all involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭essdee

Did the 100k today - my longest cycle to date. Conditions were close to ideal - light breeze and mostly dry roads. Thanks to the guy who told me early on that I was killing myself by being in too high a gear. I moved to a lower gear for most of the rest of the cycle and found the distance fine. Food (at start, middle and end) was very good - in quantity and variety. Well done and thanks to organisers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭Eaglebridie 32

Did the 100k too, well organized, loads of food, perfect weather, great company, nothing more to say but well done D.S.W. Looking forward to next year already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

It was fast! And I was a bit disappointed with the headwind down the final hill into Castlecomer offering no rest.
Thanks to Deenside for another really well run event and to Daithi and the other lads that dragged me round after lunch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭nilhg

Chapeau to Deenside Wheelers, great route, well marshalled, loads of good grub and lovely weather, what more could you ask for.

Really enjoyed the day, definitely one to do again for next year .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭michael196

incredibly fast up to the first food stop. frequently tipping over 43 kmph.

First -class event as always from Deenside. Their sportives have never disappointed. Plenty of food before during and after (the chicken curry at the end was just what I needed.) A good route and excellently marshalled. Well done to everyone involved in organising it.

32km/h average for me. Tried to keep up with the MCC train out of Stradbally, but wasn't able for it, but got in with a good group from Ballyroan to the finish, which made a big difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭biffontour

First time doing one of these, Did the 50Km with no problem, very much enjoyed myself, very well organised, perfect weather helped. Don't think it will be my last event to attend. Have my certificate sitting with pride on the mantle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 735 ✭✭✭Buzwaldo

Great event, great weather. Curry at end really hit the spot.
Great pace to foodstop - will have to learn to pace myself better when headwind awaits! (Or leave foodstop with more than 2 speedmerchants - well faster than me- for company).
Well done deenside for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭Seweryn

Another fantastic Event by Deenside Wheelers. Not much more to add really.

Deenside Guys must have some way of booking weather for their Events, as it happens to be brilliant every time, no matter how bad the previous days were.

Did anyone mention the food?.

Thank you all and see you next time!
