Got a bit of a problem, my HP Pavillion G6 wont boot up, drive issue so i popped it into a caddy and tried to run chkdsk that way but it wont run because its a 'RAW' drive? In disk management its saying its a healthy drive though?

How do i get around this?

Easy answer: format the drive. :D

Unless you need the data... then you'll need to run some recovery software first.

D'oh, i need the data is the thing. And the recovery software alot of the time doesn't do what it says on the tin. Cant understand why its 'RAW' though? It was off the shelf so the partitions were created already so they should have been ok. (i read somewhere that its RAW because part of the partition was unallocated??)

RAW means that Windows cannot find any partitions on the HDD (or any filesystems on the partitions).

Try popping the drive in another PC. If it still says RAW, your data is most likely gone. If you know a Linux savvy someone, ask them to give it a go with an Ubuntu Live USB stick or similar, sometimes you have more luck in that environment trying to recover data.

    Good luck!

Ok, sounds like its more of a last resort option. I need to start thinking about a full backup first though (which is gonna be tough when i cant read the disk)

If you have the space, create an image f the disk. You can use dd to do this. Then you can attempt to recovery data from the image.

Can you post the SMART data of the HDD? http://www.hdtune.com/download.html
